  • Typical Dolomites church architecture and graveyard ironwork in Leonhard-St Leonardo, a Dolomites village in the Badia region of south Tyrol, Italy. The church of San Leonardo and its Gothic tower was built between 1776 and 1778 by Franz Singer on a previous medieval building consecrated in 1347. South Tyrol is a very religious and traditional country. The weekly walk to Mass and the celebration of religious festivals and processions are part of the culture and tradition in South Tyrol. In almost every house you will find a cross on a corner with consecrated palm branches over there. Also in the stable there are consecrated palm branches to keep away every disaster. South Tyroleans are almost all Catholics and quite conservative. San Leonardo is in the municipality of Badia populated mostly by people who speak the ancient Ladin language.

  • Empty rigid-design gas holders architecture at the Oval, South London. The steel frames are seen against an afternoon sky at Oval, in south London - their strengthening architecture showing how the gasometer design has been an effective method storing gas for a hundred years. The Oval Gasholders at The Oval cricket ground, in spite of no longer being used, are now a grade 2 listed structure. Typical volumes for large gasholders are about 50,000 cubic metres, with 60 metre diameter structures. Gasholders tend to be used nowadays for balancing purposes (making sure gas pipes can be operated within a safe range of pressures) rather than for actually storing gas for later use.

  • Ornately decorated hinges on a door at Fontfroide Abbey near Narbonne, France. Fontfroide Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery in France, situated 15 kilometers south-west of Narbonne. It was founded in 1093 by Aimery I, Viscount of Narbonne, but remained poor and obscure, and needed to be refounded by Ermengarde, Viscountess of Narbonne. The abbey fought together with Pope Innocent III against the heretical doctrine of the Cathars who lived in the region. It was dissolved in 1791 in the course of the French Revolution. The premises, which are of very great architectural interest, passed into private hands in 1908, when the artists Gustave and Madeleine Fayet dAndoque bought it to protect the fabric of the buildings from an American collector of sculpture. They restored it over a number of years and used it as a centre for artistic projects. It still remains in private hands. Today it is open to paying guests.

  • A rather eccentric-looking man is seated on a bench on Blackpool's North Pier. This northern seaside resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. The pier has intricate cast ironwork seat backs dating from 1863 and the man sits with ankles crossed, wearing a suit and trilby hat on a warm summer's day. In the background we see families - parents and children - playing and walking on the beach at low-tide - the golden sands a much-visited aspect of Blackpool, the largest resort in the north of England and visited traditionally by working people from industrial towns and cities during the industrial revolution.

  • Looking up from beach level, we see the steps and slightly rusting railings as seaside girls use the stairs to descend from the upper Kings Road level near the West Pier. The neglected iron-work is showing the rust from exposure to numerous salt air and water storms over the years and is need of fresh paint to brighten this seaside resort. The two ladies chat as they come down and one licks an ice-cream cone, both happy on this warm spring day. Way above them, two other women are seated on chairs, overlooking the steps and the seaside beyond and an anonymous man stands with his back to us at the very top.
