After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. • Father Peter Geldard sits in his former Anglican Church near Faversham, England. He sits in a pew clasping his hands together and looking away as if lost in thought, the Christian cross and altar in the distance. Geldard is known for his stance against the Church of England's vote allowing the ordination of women priests in 1992, causing a huge row with Anglican church worshippers. Clergy, including five bishops, eventually left to join the Catholic Church including Father Geldard, who led the opposition and became a notorious debater, campaigner, and general nuisance to the church. He eventually resigned from his Anglican orders, moved out of his vicarage house and along with thirty-five members of his former parish (including the churchwardens and all the members of the parish council), now attends Mass at the Catholic church in Faversham.

  • Domesticated Asian elephants preparing to join the procession at the annual Sayaboury Elephant Festival. Sayaboury province, Lao PDR. Originally created by ElefantAsia in 2007, the 3-day elephant festival takes place in February in the province of Sayaboury with over 80,000 local and international people coming together to experience the grand procession of decorated elephants. It is now organised by the provincial government of Sayaboury. The Elephant Festival is designed to draw the public's attention to the condition of the endangered elephant, whilst acknowledging and celebrating the ancestral tradition of elephant domestication and the way of life chosen by the mahout. Laos was once known as the land of a million elephants but now there are fewer than 900 living in the country. Around 470 of them are in captivity, traditionally employed by a lucrative logging industry. Elephants are trained and worked by a mahout (handler) whose relationship to the animal is often described as a marriage and can last a lifetime. But captive elephants are often overworked and exhausted and as a consequence no longer breed. With only two elephants born for every ten that die, the Asian elephant, the sacred national emblem of Laos, is under serious threat of extinction.

  • Sam and Eve Branson, son and mother of tycoon Sir Richard, relax together on a roof terrace in Manhattan, New York. Both are queueing to join the hundreds already having paid their $200,000 for Virgin Galactic's space tourism rides in 2009. Launched in September 2004 by Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Galactic will invest up to $250 million to develop the world’s first commercial space tourism business with the building, testing and flying of five space shipShipTwos and two mother ships. It is expected that within the first full year of commercial operations Virgin Galactic will enable 500 people to fulfil their dreams of becoming astronauts. Aboard the space vehicle will be 6 passengers, each paying $200,000 for the 40 minute flight to 360,000 feet (109.73km, or 68.18 miles) and to experience 6 minutes of weighlessness.

  • A view of Ban Neunsavang - originally four villages (Khmu and Lao Loum) which have been joined together due to relocation because of the ongoing construction of the Xayaburi Dam in Northern Laos. The Xayaburi Dam is a hydroelectric dam under construction on the Lower Mekong River approximately 30 kilometres east of Xayaburi town in Northern Laos. The project is surrounded in controversy due to complaints from downstream riparians and environmentalists that the dam would cause significant and irreversible damage to the river's ecosystem. Funded by a Thai company, 90% of the electricity produced by the dam has already been pre-sold to Thailand.

Ocean Rebellion, Sea Life Extinction, Animal Rebellion and Extinction Rebellion joined together to celebrate the biodiversity found in our seas, and to grieve at the destruction of the Earth’s oceans and marine life due to climate breakdown and human interference, and the loss of lives, homes and livelihoods from rising sea levels. Extinction Rebellion is a climate change group started in 2018 and has gained a huge following of people committed to peaceful protests. These protests are highlighting that the government is not doing enough to avoid catastrophic climate change and to demand the government take radical action to save the planet.

  • Stoke Newington Zombie-a-thon. Hundreds of people joined together in protest in North London to demonstrate against the planned opening of a large Sainsbury's supermarket. Dressed up as zombies the protesters were making the point that they should keep local shops in the area and not have the high street ruined by large chains. The action by Stokey Local says: "In Stoke Newington, even the dead are rising up to say 'no' to a proposed Sainsbury's development." Walking slowly as if in a zombie film the march culminated in passing a Sainsbury's Local supermarket on the High Street. In the middle of June it was announced that a development is being planned for Wilmer Place, just beside Abney Park Cemetery on the corner of Church Street and the High Street – right in the heart of Stoke Newington. The proposed development comprises a large Sainsbury's supermarket and 44 homes and has significant implications for the diversity of the local economy, local employment, transport & traffic, noise and safety and local heritage.
