  • A young man who is interested in joining the British army has dropped in to a recruiting office in Central London. Sitting in front of an action picture of serving soldiers already living their own adventurous dream for Queen and country. They are on manoeuvres with a tank and others in support from the same platoon in the background. The lad is reading every word a brochure published by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) called Infantry Soldier which will give him the facts about the job and answer his questions regarding a new career. With squeezes on the budgets for supplying servicemen's equipment, this young recruit may not find realities of life in the armed services as idyllic as is suggested on paper.

  • A young Nepali boy is straining in his last sit-ups during a recruitment test for the Gurkha Regiment, part of a tough endurance series to find physically perfect specimens for British army infantry training. He has to perform 25 straight-kneed sit-ups at a 45° slant both within 60 seconds to pass. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those educated enough to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. The Gurkhas have been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

  • The words 'Last Day' are painted in white emulsion on a window Camden North London, England. A Jesus figure, dolls and various bric a brac are seen in the window behind the large lettering. Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. No two recessions are alike, and that applies to the current slowdown also. It has been caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

In Beijing, hutongs are alleys formed by lines of siheyuan, traditional courtyard residences. Many neighbourhoods were formed by joining one siheyuan to another to form a hutong, and then joining one hutong to another neighbourhood. Since the mid-20th century, the number of Beijing hutongs has dropped dramatically as they are demolished to make way for new roads and buildings. More recently, some hutongs have been designated as protected areas in an attempt to preserve this aspect of Chinese cultural history.

  • Walkers make their way towards Gordale Scar, on 12th April 2017, in Malham, in the Yorkshire Dales, England. Gordale Scar is a limestone ravine 1 mile 1.6 km northeast of Malham, North Yorkshire, England.[1] It contains two waterfalls and has overhanging limestone cliffs over 100 metres high. The gorge could have been formed by water from melting glaciers or a cavern collapse. The stream flowing through the scar is Gordale Beck, which on leaving the gorge flows over Janets Foss before joining Malham Beck two miles downstream to form the River Aire. A right of way leads up the gorge, but requires some mild scrambling over tufa at the lower waterfall.
