McCarthy was Britain's longest-held hostage in Lebanon, having spent over five years in captivity until his release on August 8, 1991. He shared a cell with the Irish hostage Brian Keenan, for several years.

Around him are his drinking buddies and even in the background, the celebrated landlord of this bohemian drinking hole, Norman Balon known as London’s rudest landlord. The interior of the pub was recreated on stage for the Keith Waterhouse ‘s biographical play about Bernard's life “Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell”. The play was successful and Balon's memoirs followed entitled You're Barred, You Bastards (ISBN 0283997621). The London Stock Exchange was attempted occypied in solidarity with Occupy Wall in Street in New York and in protest againts the economic climate, blamed by many on the banks. Police managed to keep people away fro the Patornoster Sqaure and the Stcok Exchange and thousands of protestors stayid in St. Paul's Square, outside St Paul's Cathedral. The Arctic 30 were arrested and the ship the Arctic Sunrise ceased by armed Ruassian special forces in international waters in the Arctic after Greenpeace peacefully tried to scale a Gazprom oil rig to prevent it from drilling for oil in the highly sensitive arctic sea.

The Arctic 30 were arrested and the ship the Arctic Sunrise ceased by armed Ruassian special forces in international waters in the Arctic after Greenpeace peacefully tried to scale a Gazprom oil rig to prevent it from drilling for oil in the highly sensitive arctic sea.

  • Greenpeace and sympathisers picket  the Russian Embassy in London as part of a global day of action in defence of the 30 Greenpeace activists arrested and detained in Russia. All 28 activists and the 2 journalists are now chrged with piracy after a week of detainment in a Murmansk prison. Gazprom, with it's appaling health and safety record is about to start drilling in the Arctic as one of the first big oil companies.
