  • A portrait of three brothers of the same family have their picture taken outside their parents' home in Westcliff, England. The eldest is a teenager of approximately 17 and is holding his youngest brother who is still only 12 months-old. The third boy is biting his lip while looking to the viewer, more anxiously than the other two. He is possibly 14 but both the elder lads wear identically-designed jumpers that cut across the throat to allow their clean white shirts and ties to remain visible. Apart from the young child, the elders share the same dark hair colour but genetically, they share one chromosome that has given them heavy eyebrows, a family trait. This was taken on Kodachrome film stock in the spring of 1961 so the look and feel of the image is dated with wonderfully muted colours that this Kodak film offered to consumers in the early 60s.

  • An elderly lady widow resident of a tower block, enjoys the company of TV newsreader in her inner-city home. Watching the television news programme on which a black man of perhaps afro-Caribbean descent is presenting, the lady sits with a cup of tea, wearing pink slippers and surrounded by personal possessions that line the sill of her high-rise window, overlooking the Middlesex Estate in the City of London. She is alone apart from the on-screen presence of the male presenter empty of human contact or friendly neighbours. She lives alone in this inner city flat but she is looking after herself showing brushed hair, a lace top and lipstick. The world outside is a depressingly empty landscape of concrete walkways and garage doors, an inner-city environment devoid of human interaction or friendliness.

Wearing less clothing than considered decent in other contexts during Mardi Gras has been documented since 1889, when the Times-Democrat decried the degree of immodesty exhibited by nearly all female masqueraders seen on the streets. Risqué costumes, including body painting, is fairly common. Social scientists studying ritual disrobement found, at Mardi Gras 1991, 1,200 instances of body-baring in exchange for beads or other favours.
