  • A strip of tourist postcards is on sale as a workman passes-by carrying ladder near the Eiffel Tower, at the Trocadero, Paris. It is an exceptionally dark and gloomy day in the French capital. In the foreground we see the uncut of tourist mementoes being offered for sale by North African vendors, hawking whatever they can to the many coaches that stop here on the Paris tour route. Images of the Mona Lisa, the Louvre art gallery, Notre Dame cathedral and the city skyline can be bought. But more strangely is the workman passing-by carrying a ladder, on his way to cleaning nearby windows. The ladder resembles the rung-effect of the postcards’ strip while in the background is the Eiffel Tower, rising above rooftops and the plaza floor.

  • Layering water reed on to the roof of a Suffolk cottage, traditional thatchers work together in afternoon sun. While in the background new straw is brought up onto the roof while in the foreground another thatcher leans into the ladder and the roof’s slope. Using a thatching tool called a Leggett, Legate, bat or dresser to position the thatch on the roof. Typically one end is treated so as to catch the ends of the reed used. This tool is used by the thatcher to dress the reed into place and ensure an even finish. Using techniques developed over thousands of years, good thatch will not require frequent maintenance. In England a ridge will normally last 10–15 years. Thatching is the craft of building a roof with dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, sedge, rushes and heather, layering the vegetation so as to shed water away from the inner roof.

  • Graffiti has been sprayed in red with aerosol on the wall of an estate agent in Herne Hill, South London England. "Homes for the Homeless, not Yuppies" it reads along with the Anarchists' Circle-A symbol, meaning that housing should be made available for families needing a roof over their heads, rather than overpricing properties for the middle-classes buying for profit and investment. We see the writing on the wall beneath pictures in windows of houses and flats in the SE24 area where prices are posted along with details of the buildings. The house-buying market climbs according to demand in areas of the city such as this, forcing up values which are out of reach to ordinary, working people unable to climb the property ladder.

  • Having packed nearly all their possessions into a removal company's truck, a family have left this terraced house apart from a telephone that sits on the carpet in the middle of the carpet, on a ground floor home in Herne Hill, South London England UK. The family have taken the precaution of using a professional removal company, rather than trying to move themselves, and we see a yellow storage van parked outside in the street ready to drive the house's contents to the new property. This family home is now empty awaiting its new occupants who will soon arrive with their own items.

  • Against orange evening light, a forest of high-rise cranes stand upright at the masive Canary Wharf development on London's Docklands, England. It is early evening and the crane drivers have left for the day, the day's shift have stopped work before resuming tomorrow. The silhouetted lines of each structure stand out clearly against the skyline before the regeneration of this region of East London grows upward. Canary Wharf is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape.

  • Emergency crews and the devastated fuselage of a British Midland Airways Boeing 737-400 series jet airliner which lies on an embankment of the M1 motorway at Kegworth, near East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire, England. On the night of 8th January 1989, flight 92 crashed due to the shutting down of the wrong, malfunctioning engine. Attempting an emergency landing, 47 people died and 74 people, including seven members of the flight crew, sustained serious injuries. The aircraft's tail snapped upright at ninety degrees and here perished most of the passenger fatalities. The devastation was hampered by woodland and the fire fighters are attempting to rescue survivors or extract those killed in this air disaster that proved one of Britain's worst.

  • Two Chinese workmen work as a team attaching paper lanterns to an Oriental shop during preparations in London's Chinatown for the mid-Autumn (also Lantern or Moon) Festival where paper lanterns are to hang. The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Zhongqiu Festival is a popular harvest festival celebrated by Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese people, dating back over 3,000 years to moon worship in China's Shang Dynasty. In Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines, it is also sometimes referred to as the Lantern Festival or Mooncake Festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. It is a date that parallels the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar, when the moon is at its fullest and roundest.

  • The last light of day fades on the still waters of Sgeir Nam Biast, a bay overlooking Waternish Headland, near Dunvegan, north-west Isle of Skye, Scottish Highlands. A solitary light bulb glows from an upstairs room in this isolated cottage across the calm lake. The weather is perfect but unusual for one of the wildest parts of Britain. Farming practices have changed irreversably in a generation and many residents have English accents rather than that of native Scots islanders as city dwellers from the far south seek an alternative to urban lifestyles. The weather can have adverse effects on those unprepared for such wild conditions, especially during harsh winters when violent storms batter these Atlantic coasts. But old crofts have been converted to bed and breakfast homes, catering for tourist visitors who adore this form of idyllic escapism.<br />
