  • An officer from the Atlanta Police Department puts his boot on a man's chest who is lying still in the gutter on the street. He and another person have been fighting in the downtown area and the officer has arrived in his patrol car after reports that a street brawl needed his interception. The officer's belt with a gun secured in its holster can be seen from a low ground level angle. It is a desolate and sinister place and the lights from a passing car and the green fluorescent glow from a parking lot (car park) is in the background. The police officer needs to calm the violent situation, pacifying the two men before the matter gets out of hand and preventing him from causing more trouble, he places his weight on the thorax to pin the male on the ground.

  • As the Statten Island ferry nears the business district and skyscrapers of Manhattan Island, a New York City Police Department (NYPD) police officer stands guard at the very front (the bow) of the boat. It is approximately ten days after the 9/11 attacks and with pistol safely holstered and arms folded, he can see the settling dust from Ground Zero beyond the safety chain, where the Twin Towers once stood. It is a bright day and behind the policeman, commuters are already returning to work because normality is a priority for those affected by disruption and fear.

  • The message in graffiti lettering "Don't come here they attack you" has been written on a wall outside a house in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, Merseyside England. Flat 1A has a bright red-painted door and red bricks in an otherwise poverty-stricken district of this poor inner-city where crime and social deprivation has become the normal way of life for Scouses (someone from Liverpool). We see the red theme carried throughout this image of threat and ill-discipline where survival is clearly hard. These 'back to back' terraced houses have largely been demolished during Liverpool's regeneration during the 60s and 70s though some remain, accommodating unfortunate families on low-income.

  • A Metropolitan Police diver surfaces beneath the murky waters of the River Thames in front of the tall buildings of the City of London, England. Blowing bubbles, he exhales through his oxygenated mask and looks through the Plexiglass to the viewer. The Underwater and Confined Space Search Team (UCSST), are part of the Marine Support Unit and based at Wapping. They also carry out searches in canals, ponds, lakes and reservoirs. It was set up as a full time unit in 1964. One of their most distressing jobs, however, is recovering bodies from the River. On average over 50 people lose their lives in the Thames each year and about 80% of these are by suicide (usually by jumping off one of the many bridges that cross the Thames). After a body is recovered from the River it is taken to the mortuary at Wapping Police Station for identification.

  • The massive IRA bomb in Bishopsgate Street in the heart of the City of London destroyed a substantial number of businesses and disrupted a major part of London's financial hub. In the days after the attack on 24th April 1993, we see the pictorial evacuation of smiling faces in a portrait of Pret a Manger staff, the sandwich and lunch chain (from the French 'Ready to Eat'). The image was hung above the premises and construction workers wearing hard hats transport the picture, like hundreds of other nearby businesses whose workers carried away company property, for temporary safe storage. This store was also badly damaged and had to be transferred to another location. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. It is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area.

  • Several metres above the ground, a lone protester hangs on to a street light pole in London's Trafalgar Square at the height of the famous Poll Tax Riot on 31st March 1990 as flames erupt from a building site on The Strand. Three police officers wearing helmets and riot shields brace themselves for further violence as angry crowds, demonstrating against Margaret Thatcher's local authority tax, stormed the Whitehall area and then London's West End, starting fires and overturning cars, looting stores up Charing Cross Road and St Martin's Lane. The anti-poll tax rally in central London erupted into the worst riots seen in the city for a century. Forty-five police officers were among the 113 people injured as well as 20 police horses. 340 people were arrested.

  • Gathered on the Docklands Light Railway track, a group of police investigators and health and safety experts stand beneath the devastation and wreckage caused by the IRA’s docklands bomb on 10th February 1996. Office windows have been blown out and shattered glass lies everywhere making these workplaces unusable for many months afterwards. We see the men under the tall buildings looking tiny in comparison to the chaotic aftermath of this enormous explosion the day before. The bombing marked the end of a 17-month IRA ceasefire during which Irish, British and American leaders worked for a political solution to the troubles in Northern Ireland. 2 people were killed in the half-tonne lorry bomb blast which caused an estimated £85 million damage.

  • A young family walk gloomily past property Sold signs in a street at Grays, Essex England. Passing the prominent signs that bear the name of Quirk Deakin, a local estate agent in the industrial towns of south Essex and the Thames Gateway, is the location for dramatic increases of new housing developments. Both the parents and their daughter look depressed in this time of economic recession, when families are having their homes repossessed after defaulting on mortgage repayments. It is a bright summer day in Grays, east of the capital, just outside of the M25 orbital motorway and on the Thames river.

  • A map detail of the London underground (subway) network has been sprayed by an unknown graffiti tagger, whose swirling aerosol spray has indelibly marked the illustration of tube lines and stations in England's capital. We see the poster title Journey Planner and the shadow of the tube station wooden roof overhang and three styles of graffiti by three perpetrators. Graffiti vandalism costs the British taxpayer £100 million Pounds a year, £6 million alone is spent by transport companies whose cleaning squads remove offending material.

  • Viewed from a low angle, an unidentified youth is seen spraying graffiti art on to a wall in the Notting Hill area of West London, England. We see his partially-obscured face lit from behind with a strong amount of flash which throws a well-defined shadow of his hand holding a spray can. It is a chilly night and the boy's breath is seen against the frosty night air. His graffiti art has taken him some hours to spray on this white wall and shows a glossy finish. The picture is anonymous because of the young man's face is unseen and generic, because we don't see where the wall might be located.

  • Standing late at night in the doorway of a Soho nightclub in Old Compton Street, London England, a bouncer provides security for his employer. Otherwise known as doormen or door supervisers, these usually hardened men offer a deterrent for anyone causing trouble inside ot out of licensed bars and clubs such as this. Lit from overhead spotlights, he looks menacing and capable of street violence - enough to urge troublemakers to move on quick. reflected in the glass is Ed's Diner a well-known eaterie in this street. Soho is known as a rather seedy but vibrant area of London's West End and late-night social disorder fuelled by excessive alcohol is pretty much normal.

  • Two days after the Irish Republican Army (IRA) exploded a truck bomb on Bishopsgate, a main arterial road that travels north-south through London's financial area, City of London engineering officials examine the huge crater left by the terrorist device. We see debris around the hole with drainage and road material. It was said that Roman remains could be viewed at the bottom of the pit the bomb created. One person was killed when the one ton fertiliser bomb detonated directly outside the medieval St Ethelburga's church. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged, with one and a half million square feet (140,000 m²) of office space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. Costs of repairing the damage was estimated at £350 million. It was possibly the (IRA's) most successful military tactic since the start of the Troubles.

  • Standing against strong Autumnal afternoon light, two police officers from an unknown constabulary, guard one entrance to the venue where the Conservative (Tory) Party Conference is being held, at the Bournemouth International Centre that overlooks the sea in Dorset, England. In 1990, the terrorist threat came from Irish Republicans (IRA) rather than Islamist extemists and credible threats proved to be correct, that these idealists wanted to assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Police cordons were therefore an efficient method of controlling and restricting access to those without the proper delegates' or media accreditation. The most striking figure is the male officer in the foreground whose profile is prominent because of his traditional police helmet.

  • Seen from behind, two young boys are busy writing their graffiti tags on windows on a London underground tube train, during an overland section of the capital’s rail system near Ladbroke Grove. Armed with heavy-duty semi-permanent marker pens, they lads are committing the crime of defacement and criminal damage to London Underground property, a persistent problem that costs the transport company network up to £3 million a year to remove. Partitions and glass are being scribbled on with their unique identity signatures used by kids of this age to leave as a mark of their presence, like animals instinctively leave a scent on a street corner. If caught, juvenile delinquents like these may escape with only a caution because of their age but older ones are prosecuted, though some times after leaving many thousands of tags across their neighbourhood.

  • Pasted to the wall in Gerrard Street, Soho, in London's Chinatown, the Metropolitan Police are appealing for witnesses to help with their investigation of a murder of Vien Xuan Cao, a Chinese immigrant who was murdered in this street after being attacked with a meat cleaver. The implication is that this was a Triad turf war, a territorial dispute between gang members of this secret society. We see the young man's face photocopied to the paperwork, laid over more traditional images of ethnic Chinese and a boxing contest promotional poster. "Can you Help?" reads the Police's appeal and alongside, the same text has been translated into Chinese for locals to read.

  • Graffiti has been sprayed in red with aerosol on the wall of an estate agent in Herne Hill, South London England. "Homes for the Homeless, not Yuppies" it reads along with the Anarchists' Circle-A symbol, meaning that housing should be made available for families needing a roof over their heads, rather than overpricing properties for the middle-classes buying for profit and investment. We see the writing on the wall beneath pictures in windows of houses and flats in the SE24 area where prices are posted along with details of the buildings. The house-buying market climbs according to demand in areas of the city such as this, forcing up values which are out of reach to ordinary, working people unable to climb the property ladder.

  • Using a tabloid newspaper, a father seeks shelter from sunshine while sitting in a council deck chair. On the front page of the paper is a headline saying "Butchered' showing a picture of an unfortunate young 3 year-old boy murdered by a maniac axeman. Close-by is the man's own son who is digging a hole furiously in the sand. He looks uncannily like a slightly older version of the murdered boy. This coincidence is heightened because of the body-language of the digging lad, seemingly about to chop an unseen object with his red spade. Both man and boy are on holiday at the northern English seaside resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire and they are otherwise having a great time on South Beach, near the Grand Hotel building, high up on the cliff.

  • Accompanied by a pianist, south Londoners sit outside their rail station on whose wall is a screening of the silent film Easy Street starring a former local boy, Charlie Chaplin, kicking off a series of the Free Film Festival in Herne Hill in the London borough of Lambeth. There is no official record of his birth although Chaplin believed he was born at East Street in nearby Walworth. Chaplin's childhood was fraught with poverty and hardship, making his eventual trajectory ‘the most dramatic of all the rags to riches stories ever told’. Easy Street is a 1917 short comedy. In the film, the police are failing to maintain law and order and so it is Chaplin, as the Little Tramp character, who steps forward (rather reluctantly) to rid the street of bullies, help the poor, save women from madmen and generally keep the peace.

The Acropolis was once the centre of classical Greek culture which the world has inherited for its laws and philosophical thinking. Mounted above the Athenian city within fortified 60m high walls, its history is a World Heritage Site, important because of its “universal symbols of the classical spirit and civilization and form the greatest architectural and artistic complex." • A middle-aged woman walks along a gloomy street in Toxteth, Liverpool, England. Passing a boarded-up greengrocer that probably once served the local community, the lady strides past its sealed window and the name of its past owner, obviously proud of her business' quality in an otherwise run-down area. Toxteth saw serious rioting in 1981 and the legacy of social-deprivation ever since meant a breakdown of law and order. Used as the epitome of poor inner-city Britain, it is located to the south of the city and is synonymous with social issues, degradation and poverty with some of the most underprivileged families in the UK. Recently many streets in the worst areas have been demolished including a threat to Beatle Ringo Starr's childhood home.

  • It is 1985 and a farmer walks along a line of long, combustible straw and with a pitchfork and smouldering straw, sets fire to the organic material in an Essex field, southern England. It is late summer and the harvested corn has left behind short stubble which the farmer sets ablaze. This now restricted practice of destroying cereal straw and stubble by flame was stopped by the introduction of The Crop Residues (Burning) Regulations of 1993 which now restricts farmers on burning crop materials, including residues of oilseed rape, field beans and peas, except in very limited circumstances, e.g. for disease control where a plant health order has been served. The burning of straw and stubble also deprives the soil of valuable organic material and releases greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

  • A woman police officer (WPC) stands with white paint plashed over her uniform during a public protest over the Poll Tax policies of Margaret Thatcher's government in 1990. It is dark and the trouble has been growing throughout the evening when the paint was thrown by unknown protesters. Angry crowds, demonstrating against Thatcher's local authority tax, eventually stormed the Whitehall area and then London's West End, setting fire to a construction site and cars, looting stores up Charing Cross Road and St Martin's Lane. The anti-poll tax rally in central London erupted into the worst riots seen in the city for a century. Forty-five police officers were among the 113 people injured as well as 20 police horses. 340 people were arrested.

  • Sign for gunshow on 3rd March 2020 in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. Montgomery County residents’ now have constitutional right to bear arms. The Montgomery County Commissioners Court unanimously passed a resolution to make the county a gun sanctuary. The resolution was introduced by Commissioner Charlie Riley who said he wanted to take steps to protect citizens’ guns after politicians like Democrat Beto O’Rourke said he’d take away people’s guns and also called for a mandatory buyback of AK-47 and AR-15 assault rifles. It also says the county will not authorize or appropriate government funds or resources, “for the purpose of enforcing or assisting in the enforcement of any element of such acts, laws, orders, mandates, rules or regulations, that infringe on the right by the people to keep and bear arms.

The controversial boss of Pimlico Plumbers is refusing to take down a giant “bollocks to Brexit” sign on the roof of his HQ, despite the local council ordering him to remove it or face prosecution. Bos Charlie Mullins is refusing to take down the giant sign on the roof of his company HQ, despite the local council ordering him to remove it or face prosecution. Mullins cites freedom of speech and a court case involving punk band the Sex Pistols to oppose Lambeth Council’s contention that the 100ft-long sign, visible to train passengers arriving at Waterloo Station, contravenes planning law.
