  • A peeling billboard reveals older layers of Primesight street advertising incl the dystopian message "It's a wonderful world." The differences between dream and dystopia make for a comical, if slightly sad landscape in this south London street called Coldharbour Lane SW9, the home for housing estates and problem families in the borough of Lambeth. Peeling sheets of past ad campaigns after rainfall has helped tear the top layer to reveal others underneath. <br />
Primesight is one of the UK's leading Outdoor advertising companies with ownership of a diverse portfolio of products in a range of environments.

  • The remains of a billboard, now laying on the ground in a south London street. After heavy rain the layers of the advert are lying on the pavement next to a railing whose shadows from afternoon sunshine make strong diagonal lines across this detail. The sheets are drying out but need throwing away, a disposable facet of this multi-media world. The face of a model looks shocked and surprised to be abandoned on the pavement like this.

  • Peeled and torn poster showing remains of woman's face and features in Soho, central London. The eyes of female models peer through the layers of torn paper in a small street in the capital - a vandalised version of what was once an expensive advertising campaign reduced to litter and waste. The resulting image seems almost abstract, an artistic statement of dystopia and finality.

  • Old West End theatre posters uncovered on Charing Cross Road in central London. The layers of past plays and musicals have been revealed during building work to the Garrick Theatre on Charing Cross Road in the heart of the capital's West End and Theatreland. Most prominently is the word 'Last' that may refer to the last night or week's run of a production long-forgotten or perhaps celebrated in the history of London stage. The Garrick Theatre is a West End theatre, located on Charing Cross Road, in the City of Westminster. It opened on 24 April 1889.

  • Layering water reed on to the roof of a Suffolk cottage, traditional thatchers work together in afternoon sun. While in the background new straw is brought up onto the roof while in the foreground another thatcher leans into the ladder and the roof’s slope. Using a thatching tool called a Leggett, Legate, bat or dresser to position the thatch on the roof. Typically one end is treated so as to catch the ends of the reed used. This tool is used by the thatcher to dress the reed into place and ensure an even finish. Using techniques developed over thousands of years, good thatch will not require frequent maintenance. In England a ridge will normally last 10–15 years. Thatching is the craft of building a roof with dry vegetation such as straw, water reed, sedge, rushes and heather, layering the vegetation so as to shed water away from the inner roof.

It is a very old roofing method and has been used in both tropical and temperate climates. Thatch is still the choice of affluent people who desire a rustic look for their home or who have purchased an originally thatched abode.

Cham potters do not use a wheel to make pots, instead clay is pressed into shape using the hands. Layers of clay are added to the original piece and the potter moves around the object, pressing the clay into the desired shape. They are then put directly in the sun and completely bone dried, making them ready to be fired. Firing is done in an open pit with temperatures going up to 800 degree Celcius. The pots are arranged together and covered with layers of rice straw, which is set on fire.

  • A Hindu Cham woman makes a ceramic pot using a traditional method in the famous pottery village of Bau Truc in Central Vietnam.

  • Lens flare from setting sun between layers of cloud over inner-city south London rooftops. As the sun sinks inn the winter sky, over the inner-city of Britain's capital, we see a variety of eras in the architecture of urban housing: From Edwardian period in the foreground to the tower blocks from the 60s in the distance. A warm glow of light flares from the camera lens to give an almost cosy feel to the landscape while giving a sense of raw cold on this April evening.

  • Having just unearthed more bodies from layers of volcanic ash and pumice, an archaeologist's assistant pauses for a cigarette, kneeling beside a victim of the AD79 eruption of Mount Versuvius over the ancient Roman town of Pompeii. Buried beneath huge amounts of toxic material this person was suffocated and crushed from falling debris. Preserved in a shell of volcanic material it is to be removed from this site on top of a villa roof where, it is calculated, this citizen was one of the last to die, having climbed 4 metres above ground level to await its fate. The Italian man ears a red t-shirt and holds a pick that has scraped and brushed away the soil to reveal the human form which also shows another body beneath. Others litter the rooftop too proving that many survivors of the first eruption perished after the second many hours later.

  • Londoners have their umbrellas turned inside out or dash through seasonal rain showers and wind gusts in central London. In the foreground, a businessman runs into a strong wind that has brought a brief spell of bad weather into the capital's streets, catching out those with fragile brolleys or those without all-weather layers. The scene is in Cannon Street in the heart of London's financial centre and oldest historical part of the former Roman walled city dating from the first century.

  • In the peristyle of the House of the Vettii in Pompeii is a fresco where an ancient painted mural to the Greek Goddess Urania was unearthed from volcanic ash after 2,000 years. In Greek mythology, Urania which stems from the Greek word for 'heavenly' or 'of heaven', was the muse of astronomy. Some accounts list her as the mother of the musician Linus, usually depicted as having a globe in her left hand, she can foretell the future by the arrangement of the stars and is often associated with Universal Love and the Holy Spirit. Those who are most concerned with philosophy and the heavens are dearest to her. Painted before the catastrophic eruption of Versuvius in AD79, the frescoes have been uncovered from metre-layers of ash and pumice but are now fading from moisture and cracked plaster.

  • In the Villa of the Vettii in Pompeii we see a fresco in the lararium where a shrine to Roman guardian spirits of the household was situated. Family members performed daily rituals here to guarantee their protection by these domestic spirits. The first two characters are the deeply venerated 'lares' (presumed sons of Mercury and Lara) depicted as two young men in dancing postures, holding drinking horns that guaranteed prosperity. In the centre is the 'genius'. She is another guardian and fertility spirit ensuring the family line (gens) would continue and she wears the 'toga praetexta', bordered in purple, the garment of high-ranking Roman magistrates. Painted before the catastrophic eruption of Versuvius in AD79, these frescoes have been uncovered from metre-layers of volcanic ash and pumice but are now fading from moisture and cracked plaster.

Taken from a nearby rooftop on the 30th floor, this construction of elevated highways is a symbol of Shanghai’s recent development as it dwarfs the remaining houses below at the average original level of the city, now reaching for the sky. Busy traffic swirls, their lights blurring around in a never-ending stream of cars which is slowly filling Shanghai’s polluted streets.

The Fish River rises in the hills to the north and only flows sporadically, but over the millennia it has carved an enormous canyon 500 metres deep into the unstable surface of Namibia, to form the second deepest canyon in the world. The walls of the canyon are an object lesson in geology: every layer for the last 1000 million years is clearly visible.

The water ball is similar to a zorb (rolling downhill in an orb, generally made of transparent plastic), but this has only one layer and is designed for water travel rather than downhill rolling. The giant ball is usually two metres in diameter and has a zippered entrance to allow for easy entry and exit. It stores flat and weighs 15 kilograms. The best water balls are constructed from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) 0.6–0.7mm thick. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_ball

Each cool evening the tapper removes a thin layer of bark along a downward half spiral on the tree trunk. She makes an incision in the bark of the tree and fluid then drains into a collecting vessel. If done carefully and with skill, this tapping panel will yield latex for up to 5 years. Malaysia is one of the top exporters of natural rubber. Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, some 30 km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia.
