  • A pair of womens' red shoes have been left on a white wall in south London. With rough plaster on the top of the wall and weeds growing at the foot of the dividing section of cement, the red shows look like Judy Garland's Dorothy's shoes in the Wizard of Oz movie. There is also a tradition of film titles, music and a fairy tale by Hand Christian Anderson that are inspired by Red Shoes as a cultural theme.

  • Large arrows coloured red, green and yellow point north, west and east - or up, right and left - in three directions, to offer directions to seminars for Ernst & Young staff during their annual Academy Day held for 3,000 of company London employees at Excel in London's Docklands, England. The people are either confidently pacing forward, standing still to seek guidance or simply spontaneously emerging from the shadows to a brighter future, a moment when freedom of choice is offered and the road ahead dictates their fate. It is a scene of corporate theate and each employee will attend this fair where pep-talks from executives, outside speakers and motivational gurus talk to large groups of E & Y personnel so their presence on this day away from the office is vital for the year's business ahead.

  • As a sleeping homeless man lies curled up in his sleeping bag on a central London pavement, two window cleaners have carefully placed their ladders at his feet to clean a Boots the chemist sign. Each wearing identical blue working overalls and each wiping the frontage with their left hands, the men are symbolic of the working man versus that of a homeless person without a job, prospects or perhaps a future. The wide gap between hopelessness and the pride of one's achievement is shown here on the sidewalk of modern-day Britain. London is home to some 50,000 homeless people whose place of rest can often be recesses and shop doorways where they seek sanctuary from the cold and street violence. On the opposite end of the wealth and social divides are those who seek work with a positive outlook on life.

  • A father looks down at four coloured umbrellas that have been left by children on the pavement outside a terraced street in Belfast. Having played then finished with the waterproof items the kids have simply abandoned them on the paving stones as a man who might be a father looks down, deciding whether to pick them up himself and order the kids to do it themselves. Into the distance are identically designed Victorian terraced houses still used by families in this British province of Northern Ireland?

  • Having packed nearly all their possessions into a removal company's truck, a family have left this terraced house apart from a telephone that sits on the carpet in the middle of the carpet, on a ground floor home in Herne Hill, South London England UK. The family have taken the precaution of using a professional removal company, rather than trying to move themselves, and we see a yellow storage van parked outside in the street ready to drive the house's contents to the new property. This family home is now empty awaiting its new occupants who will soon arrive with their own items.

  • A rather obese woman stands in the waves at the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. With hands behind her back and fingers interlocked the lady wears a turquoise bathing costume that just about fits her ample, wide body. Her bottom is large as are her legs that have cellulite on the tops of her thighs. She looks left alone, a solitary person standing with her back to the viewer - or perhaps she is standing guard, keeping watch on children as they play safely in the sea. Water splashes against her lower legs and is frozen still by a fast shutter speed. It is a fine, bright sunny afternoon on this Eastern coast of England, more noted for very changeable weather rather than the heatwave experienced here.

  • Separated by four floors, two employees of the auditing company Ernst & Young, make their way along walkways in the main atrium of E & Y's European headquarter offices at More London, London England. Striding confidently between offices, the two people are unaware of each other's presence but make their way from right to left of this tall, upright scene of modernity. The senior person on top may have an advantage from better opportunities, the low-ranking worker below may be needing to rise up the ranks. Morning sunlight floods through the green tinted glass that overlooks Tower Bridge on the River Thames. The term atrium comes from Latin: a large and light central hall or reception of a house where guests were greeted. The depth and height of all levels from near the top to almost the bottom give a sense of vertigo, a dizzying perspective.

Having offloaded their load from a nearby lorry (truck) the work colleagues haul the carpet over the left shoulders and continue down this quiet suburban street towards an address on the right. By balancing the weight and making the centre of gravity in the middle to ease their effort, the men still struggle to make their way on the pavement.

In this side street of a south London suburb, we see the garbage lying on the pavement (sidewalk) surrounded by autumnal maple leaves. The wall in the background has been roughly painted, the bricks starting to crack. But the picture is about the similar colours of the wall to the Southwark borough council bags that are provided free for residents wishing to dispose of green garden waste only. If you live in a house or flat at street level you will have a blue box and bag for your recycling. In most cases, if you have a green rubbish bin you will also be able to use a blue box and bag.

  • In mid-flight between Hamburg in Germany and London Heathrow, we see a passenger’s view of a climbing airliner's port wing and the hazy German landscape below at a high altitude. The sky above reflects its soft blue hue on the upper surface of the left wing but the air below is a soft pink, a rural patchwork of fields and villages. As an example of aerodynamic design, the flying machine is a perfect gesture towards the conquest of flight, copied from the characteristics of a bird’s anatomy. As art, the mere beauty of taking to the air and maintaining level, organised speed is so routine, we rarely look our from our window to marvel at how and why. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

There have been less political rallies in the 2018 election run in Brazil, this is in part because of a change in funding legislation for the political parties, meaning less money is available for campaigning.

  • The words 'Last Day' are painted in white emulsion on a window Camden North London, England. A Jesus figure, dolls and various bric a brac are seen in the window behind the large lettering. Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. No two recessions are alike, and that applies to the current slowdown also. It has been caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

Southend-on-Sea is a seaside town on the north side of the Thames estuary 40 miles 64 km east of central London. • Remains of the stolen Barbara Hepworth sculpture Two Forms (1969) stolen from Dulwich Park where it was installed for 40 years. Dame Barbara Hepworth DBE (10 January 1903 – 20 May 1975) was an English sculptor. The sculpture which is insured for £500,000 is believed to have been stolen by scrap metal thieves who entered the unprotected park at night on Dec 19th 2011. The bronze piece, called Two Forms (Divided Circle), was cut from its plinth overnight, Trevor Moore of Dulwich Park Friends said. The price it could fetch as scrap metal would only be a tiny fraction of its value as a complete work. Southwark Council is offering a reward for the thieves' arrest and conviction.
