  • As if about to be crunched underfoot, shattered glass from the windows of offices in the historic City of London side-street, stickers and notices for Access (Mastercard) and American Express (Amex) credit cards lie on the disaster-strewn pavement (sidewalk). This is some of the debris lying about after the huge Bishopsgate bomb on 24th April 1993, London's most expensive terrorist atrocity during the Provisional Irish Republican Army's (IRA) sustained bombings on the British mainland. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged, with one and a half million square feet (140,000 sq m) of office space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. Costs of repairing the damage was estimated at £350 million and was possibly the IRA's most successful military tactic since the start of what was called the Troubles from 1969 onwards.

Its demise will be welcome to many locals who see Elephant as an inner-city ghetto though gentrification at the expense of affordable housing provokes others to protest. Lend Lease is working in partnership with Southwark Council to deliver a £1.5 billion regeneration project in Elephant & Castle. Over the next ten years, we will build nearly 3,000 new homes, over 50 shops and restaurants, and a brand new park. The Elephant & Castle redevelopment is integral to Southwark’s wider regeneration plan, which includes the creation of a new pedestrianised town centre, market square, 5,000 new and replacement homes, approximately 500,000 square feet of retail and leisure space, an integrated public transport hub and five green spaces.

  • Two buskers have been questioned by a police officer, their shadows played on a stone wall in Trafalgar Square. As the conversation draws to a close, the juggler of the two buskers begins to throw his red diabolo top into the air and spins it with the help of two sticks. Their respective shadows lend a clue of their numbers, that one extra person (the policeman) is still nearby. The diabolo (commonly misspelled as diablo; formerly also known as "the devil on two sticks") is a juggling prop consisting of a spool which is whirled and tossed on a string tied to two sticks held one in each hand. A huge variety of tricks are possible using the sticks, string, and various body parts.

  • A three year-old girl throws her head back with joy while playing with her young one-year-old brother in the back garden of their South London home. We look down on the small girl who throws her head back with delight and the freedom of an early summer afternoon at home. Little brother laughs with pleasure too, sitting on a toy tractor. The picture is slanted to lend a sense of drama. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. The two gentlemen however appear to be taking a lunchtime break from their desk jobs and carrying sports holdalls with the 90s sports brand Head, are probably on their way to any number of city-based gyms. They look successful and wealthy, products of a healthy economy and a business culture of bonuses and high prospects of affluence whereas the statues lend a feeing of suppression and the treadmill of their anonymous daily lives as if they were part of some Orwellian society.

  • A charity worker is handing out leaflets in a London street, his hope is to entice the public to give money or lend support to the work of his organisation. He holds out his paper while wearing a bib saying Homeless Not Hopeless meaning that those without a home isn't necessarily without aspiration nor pride. But passers-by only want to continue their journeys unhindered and not bothered by what in Britain are known as charity muggers - or chuggers - and hated for their common presence on street corners, watching for their target demographics to donate hard-earned money. The man walking past without making eye contact is a gentleman of south-Asian or of Arab appearance and he looks to the ground without acknowledging the volunteer worker.

  • Following UK commercial driving law, a lorry driver relaxes by reading in a window at the M40 motorway services in Warwickshire, England. Leaning back while engrossed in his book, the man is sitting in sunlight on this summer's day. Outside is a poster advertising the premium ice cream brand, Magnum. A girl is shown also lounging about enjoying a Magnum on a beautiful sun-kissed beach, with the sun reflecting on a calm sea. We see Magnum's web site and their products of Classic and White chocolate snacks in their wrappers. The man is oblivious to the nature of the ad but it lends a sense of paradise versus reality, between the fantasy of youth, natural beauty and the reality of an older working man on the road.

  • Three days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, President George W Bush tours Ground Zero, the scene of two airlliners crashing into the World Trade Center. We see him live on CNN television which is transmitting pictures to a rest-stop service station in New York State. The caption reads 'America's New War' and 'Pres. Bush visiting with volunteers and rescuers' which turned out to be his finest hour in those days and months following the atrocities. A Burger King restaurant also lends itself to a President of the fast food and fast war era of American politics.

  • Looking up from the ground, we see above our heads some Renaissance frescoes (the painting on the left is of Vienna) that were painted on the ceiling of the first courtyard in Palazzo Vecchia in Florence's Piazza della Signoria. The first courtyard was designed in 1453 by Michelozzo and the frescoes on the walls, representing scenes of the Austrian Habsburg estates, were painted in 1565 by Giorgio Vasari for the wedding celebration of Francesco I de' Medici, the eldest son of Cosimo I de' Medici, and Johanna of Austria, sister of the Emperor Maximilian. The harmoniously proportioned columns, at one time smooth, and untouched, were at the same time richly decorated with gilt stuccoes. Their faded appearance now lends them a quality of fine antiquity.

  • Young Born Again Christians express emotions during a ministry at Butlins holiday centre in Minehead, Somerset, England. The annual meeting of fellow-evangelical pilgrims at one of Britain's holiday centres gives this otherwise jolly evening entertainment venue - a ballroom for dance and music - lends a far different atmosphere during this religious festival of prayer and dialogue with Jesus. Young people hold up their hands towards Heaven with either peace or pain on their faces.
