  • An assistant lighthouse keeper records the wind speed at St Catherine's Lighthouse, Isle of Wight, UK.  Before automation, the lighthouse had been a weather reporting station for the Meteorological Office for some years; the keepers made hourly reports which included the temperature, humidity, cloud height and formation and wind direction and force. Following de-manning of the lighthouse an automatic weather reporting station was installed which sends details of the weather conditions to the Met. Office. St Catherine's Lighthouse was automated in 1997 and all Trinity House lighthouses have been automated since November 1998.

The contents were tipped out of the window and there was another one around the other side of the lighthouse in case the wind was blowing the other way. Bishop Rock Lighthouse stands on a rock ledge 4 miles west of the Scilly Isles. It was converted to automatic operation during 1991 with the last keepers leaving the lighthouse on 21 December 1992.

The main light, visible for up to 30 nautical miles in clear weather is the third most powerful light in the Trinity House Service. St Catherine’s Lighthouse was automated in 1997 with the keepers leaving the lighthouse on 30 July. The lighthouse is now monitored and controlled from the Trinity House Operations and Planning Centre at Harwich in Essex.

Cape Wrath Lighthouse was built in 1828 by Robert Stevenson and was manned until 1998, when it was converted to automatic operation by the Northern Lighthouse Board. Dungeness lies at the southernmost point of Kent and is an enormous flat of sand and shingle which has been a hazard to shipping for hundreds of years. Lighthouses were first mentioned at Dungeness in 1600 however the present Dungeness lighthouse which is managed by Trinity House Lighthouse Corporation was built in 1961 and was converted to automatic operation in 1991.

  • St. Mary's Lighthouse is on tiny St Mary's Island, just north of Whitley Bay on the coast of North East England. The small rocky tidal island is linked to the mainland by a short concrete causeway which is submerged at high tide. It was decommissioned by Trinity House in 1984. While it no longer functions as a working lighthouse, it is easily accessible (when the tide is out) and is regularly open to visitors; in addition to the lighthouse itself there is a small museum and visitor's centre.

As with all lighthouses in the British Isles, Nash Point is no longer manned, the last keepers leaving on 5 August 1998. It was the last light in Wales to be automated and the second last in the UK to be de-manned.

The naval Battle of Solebay took place on 28 May and 7 June 1672 and was the first naval battle of the Third Anglo-Dutch War. Southwold is a small town on the North Sea coast, in the Waveney district of the English county of Suffolk. It is located on the North Sea coast at the mouth of the River Blyth within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town is around 11 miles (18 km) south of Lowestoft and 29 miles (47 km) north-east of Ipswich.

A project by Danish artist, Lise Autogena, in collaboration with Joshua Portway and composer Orlando Gough. Ships horns from an armada of vessels off-shore, seventy five brass players on-shore and the Souter Lighthouse Foghorn  performed a Foghorn Requiem, an ambitious musical performance to mark the disappearance of the sound of the foghorn from the UK’s coastal landscape.
