  • Virtually deserted streets looking down tram lines towards the exterior of Grand Central on 24th April 2020 in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom. Coronavirus or Covid-19 is a new respiratory illness that has not previously been seen in humans. While much or Europe has been placed into lockdown, the UK government has extended stringent rules as part of their long term strategy, and in particular social distancing.

  • Leaning traffic post and twisting double-yellow lines in Soho, central London. We look down to street level to see the wonky character of lines and geometry: The badly-painted parallel parking restrictioin lines that bend with the angle of the kerb as well as the damaged, scraped and leaning bollard, there to deter drivers from parking on the pavement but which has been pushed over by a driver. The picture is about the irony of geometry, of the madness of urban details.

  • Cyclist passes through a yellow grid box junction in London, United Kingdom. A box junction is a road traffic control measure designed to prevent congestion and gridlock at junctions. The surface of the junction is typically marked with a criss-cross grid of diagonal painted lines or only two lines crossing each other in the box, and vehicles may not enter the area so marked unless their exit from the junction is clear, or they are intending to turn right and are prevented from doing so by oncoming traffic, or other vehicles on the box waiting to turn right.

  • Beneath the giant, solid pillars of the Bank of England in the heart of London’s financial district – the ancient Square Mile – a man dressed in a traditional pinstripe suit has stopped to make a phone call or check for messages. Halting his journey along this street he has opted to stand in line with a traffic no waiting cone and also near double-yellow lines that restrict parking or stopping. Without the cone or lines this scene would otherwise be without colour - the columns of this financial institution and the pavement (sidewalk) are drab – so the welcome yellow gives this picture more interest. We only see the man from the rear view and so he remains anonymous, a small person set against the scale of a large-scale financial landscape.

  • BAE System Hawks of the Red Arrows, Britain's RAF aerobatic team and airfield signs landscape. Six Hawk jet aircraft of the elite team, taxi in after another training flight past warning boards that are appropriate for armed jet fighters at RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus rather than aerobatic planes. From a low angle we see a wide landscape looking over the taxi-way markings that direct military airplanes. The Red Arrows aircraft are a deep red colour that stand out against the horizon in an identical line. It is a wide expanse of road surface, the yellow centre-lines are for the benefit of pilots who need guidance for parking areas after landing, or leaving towards the departing runway on the southern part of the Cypriot Mediterranean island. With the Red Arrows, the taxiing jets all peel off in unison to and from the parking area and these lines are vital for this technique.

  • The leaves dropped from overhead ash trees have been blown off football pitch lines by council workers in Ruskin Park, London borough of Lambeth. Days before the weekend starts and the field is used by youth league teams, the painted lines are more visible than before when they were covered, inhibiting clear decisions during a game. It is a scene of regular order, of a regimented and tidy landscape that suggests what pointless job someone has during times of austerity - when Lambeth council is closing libraries, toilets and childrens' play facilities.
