  • At dawn, a week after the September 11th attacks in New York and in Washington DC, we see the haunted figures of war veterans looking up at the names of dead comrades of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Constitution Gardens, Washington DC where 58,195 names of casualties are recorded on its polished wall. In the foreground are some of those mens' identities whose average age was 19 in the sixties and seventies. A hazy sun rises over the point of the Washington Memorial at a time when the nation was mourning those killed in the New York and Washington attacks, when the military was about to mobilise once again with many American lives lost. The Vietnam war however, remains a low-point in the nation's history and the old men who survived return to trace their buddies which helps them deal with the traumatic loss of their friends and their own youth.

  • Awkwardly, carrying their giant rubber rings by wrapping their left hands over the top curves, three kids make their way tentatively down a ramp of concrete to a poolside ride called River Run. There are two yellow rings and one red, alternatively manhandled along the path which is already wet from other holidaymakers in this northern seaside resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. We do not see the childrens' faces or upper-bodies and are therefore anonymous. A sign for the ride lists a series of rules for safe enjoyment of this leisure pursuit which they are urged to obey.

  • A wide view of Manchester Town Hall in Albert Square bathed in late afternoon orange light. The statue of an unknown public figure stands prominently with his arm raised towards this Victorian-era, Neo-gothic municipal building in Manchester, England. The building functions as the ceremonial headquarters of Manchester City Council and houses a number of local government departments but here, the 5 Olympic rings hang from the building's facade, a gesture for when the city was the bidding candidate for the 1996 and 2000 Olympics. Completed by architect Alfred Waterhouse in 1877, the building features imposing murals by the artist Ford Madox Brown depicting important events in the history of the city. The Town Hall was rated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building in 1952 and the Town Hall Extension completed in 1938, was Grade II* listed in 1974.

The House Mill is a grade 1 listed 18th century tidal mill set in a beautifulriverside location in the heart of London’s East End. This remarkable building is believed to be the largest tidal mill still in existence in the world.Originally built in 1776, on an existing pre-Domesday site it is a timber framed building clad in brick on three sides. In addition to flour making, the mill served the famous distillery next door on Three Mills Island. Built across the River Lea, the Mill trapped the sea and river water at high tide to turn the water wheels on the ebb. The outflowing water turned four large wheels driving twelve pairs of millstones. These four wheels and six of the pairs of millstones survive together with other historic machinery. The Mill ceased milling in 1941 after it was bombed during the Second World War.
