  • School children eat their morning porridge before lessons commence.<br />
It is school policy that all the children wear their uniform; not only does it make the children immediately identifiable, and everyone in community knows where a child comes from and belongs, but it also safeguards against child trafficking. The Uniforms are made affordable, as they are sourced locally. They can also be subsidised, in exchange for parental involvement, for children from poorer homes. It is a good a way of getting the support of the community and for all children to be equal at school.

  • A Polish man leans over to put the finishing touches to two small snowmen that now occupy a park bench on Goose Green in East Dulwich, Southwark, South London, England. This otherwise green space has seen snow falls that have gripped this part of the capital with unsalted road surfaces and commuting nightmares. But this young man is having fun with his diminutive snowy creations who have been dressed up in his and a friend's glasses, their scarves and gloves and with locally-found twigs. The park is relatively quiet with only a hint of the chaos elsewhere but the time spent on pointless pursuits is one way of enjoying adverse weather, rather than the more serious business of getting to work, proving also that snow brings out the childish nature in us all.

  • David Reynolds (aka Eco) is a long-term activist, campaigner in the peace movement and resident of the Faslane Peace Camp, Scotland. His home of three years is called the Earth Shack and is largely re-cycled from scrap and garbage found locally on rubbish tips. Eco leans against his garden fence holding a mug of coffee this chilly Sunday morning. Signs of his political beliefs adorn the place: CND logos and Peace on Earth statements. His mother was a ‘Carnie’ (after the word Carnival, someone working on the fairgrounds) so perhaps it’s from her that he more enjoys an alternative outdoor camping lifestyle after a few years in the army. Faslane Peace Camp is a makeshift site alongside Faslane Naval base where Trident nuclear deterrent missiles and submarines dock. The camp has been occupied continuously, in a few different locations, since 1982.

  • A local lady shopper passes-by a Closed Road sign on a hill in south London during wintry snows. Rather than drive to her local supermarket, the woman has instead parked her car in a safer place and walked to where she can stock up on provisions. She has made her way up the incline from the shop and looks over to the sign telling others that this road is temporily shut to vehicles. During a mid-winter morning, when commuters are struggling to reach their work places, the capital also finds it hard for transport and infrastructure to keep running as normal. Local councils facing government cuts also find it hard to maintain services during such challenging conditions.

  • A dumped armchair and other domestic rubbish, fly-tipped on a street corner in south London. Abandoned on the pavement, the items have made a mess in this urban location. Furniture and household possessions have been added, perhaps by others, making this area look and feel intimidating. increase in amount of rubbish illegally dumped on roadsides and back alleys cost local authorities £45m in 2014. The figures also reveal the rising cost to the public purse of cleaning up and prosecuting people who dump rubbish, with the clearance bill for local authorities rising 24% to £45.2m.

  • Children play on old crates and pallets in risk averse playground called The Land on Plas Madoc Estate, Ruabon, Wrexham, Wales. Kids play on self-made wooden bridges and swings made from materials brought in by local donors in a way that parents are nowadays scared to allow. But here in this council play park, children are encouraged to experiment with risk aversion, to enjoy a wilder form of play and interaction with others - the opposite of online relations and over safe childhoods. From the chapter entitled 'Playing with Fire' from the book 'Risk Wise: Nine Everyday Adventures' by Polly Morland (Allianz, The School of Life, Profile Books, 2015).

  • Locals look at street life below from the crumbling balconies of their old apartment block in Lisbon's Biarro Alto district. The woman holds her pet dog and a younger man leans on his arms, supported by rickety railings in afternoon sunshine. Bairro Alto is one of the oldest districts in Lisbon. Dozens of fado singing clubs animate the area. All major Portuguese newspapers once had their offices in here. Prostitution was visible and considerable. Since the 1990s, Bairro Alto went through major changes. Lisbon's city council made extensive repairs, and dozens of new restaurants, clubs and trendy shops were opened. Many young people moved into the area. Cars were banned (except for residents and emergency vehicles).
