  • A pet poodle looks towards us in the same way that an RSPCA charity box model spaniel does outside a seaside shop tourist. The shop is selling seaside resort holiday tourist trinkets – a postcard rack has been carefully placed in the middle of the pavement (sidewalk) as holidaymakers pass-by to browse the cheap mementoes. The owner of the poodle has stopped to choose some cards for those at home and allows his dog a little slack on the lead. The dog cranes its neck towards the viewer, matching the posture and stance of the model charity spaniel whose cast sits, posing in a sorrowful and empathy-making show of need, suffering and want – enough perhaps to encourage people to give to this charity, the RSPCA (the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals).

  • Mother of the bride inspects her daughter's new ring after a civil wedding ceremony in Essex, England. The older lady holds her daughter's hand and looks more intently at her newly placed wedding ring on the third finger, according to tradition. The mother also holds a glass of Pims, a well-liked drink of alcohol and fruit that helps refresh on a warm day. And wearing a very English piece of headwear is the 'fascinator' that perches on the side of the head. This European wedding has taken place inside a covered Orangery at a private wedding and event venue. Rather than marrying in a religious context, the happy couple have preferred to tie the knot in this popular setting for a non-church meaning.

  • An elderly lady watches the world go by from her street doorway in Lisbon's Bica district of the Portuguese capital. Looking out from her cosy small home that open out on to the narrow street, the old woman looks thoughtful, reflecting on her life perhaps spent in the same quarter of the Portguese capital. Lisbon's Bica district is a steep gradient area of narrow streets more peaceful and atmospheric than other busier locations where cars and trams make wider roads noisier. Flights of steps dissect the quarter which remains largely unspoilt.

  • Using a tabloid newspaper, a father seeks shelter from sunshine while sitting in a council deck chair. On the front page of the paper is a headline saying "Butchered' showing a picture of an unfortunate young 3 year-old boy murdered by a maniac axeman. Close-by is the man's own son who is digging a hole furiously in the sand. He looks uncannily like a slightly older version of the murdered boy. This coincidence is heightened because of the body-language of the digging lad, seemingly about to chop an unseen object with his red spade. Both man and boy are on holiday at the northern English seaside resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire and they are otherwise having a great time on South Beach, near the Grand Hotel building, high up on the cliff.

  • Young women on a shop hoarding with pedestrians and an elderly couple about to cross Brutoin Street in central London. An image of young and older generations is seen at this busy crossing where young women stand to one side, out for a shopping trip along the fashionable and expensive Bond Street. To their left is an elderly couple who stand separated by a wide distance from the girls - a metaphor for the wide generation gap in Britain today. The young girls live in an age of materialism and wealth while the people from their grandparents' era have survived unanticipated hardship, war and technological changes. In the background are the faces and poses of fashion models whose androgynous looks are as different to the elderly as the females along the street.

It is early evening as the ambient light fades while artificial illumination becomes the dominant light-source. With such a wide-angle perspective the bank and its architecture looks powerful and influential in the UK's economy. The dark pillars contrasting with the colourful (colorful) light emitted from this established Bank makes for a scene of stability and strength against the pity and tragedy of a past conflict that claimed millions of lives.

  • Taken six months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a German lady from the old German Democratic Republic (DDR or GDR) looks back over her shoulder nostalgically at an abandoned Trabant car on a sunlit street in eastern Berlin, once in the eastern zone before the Communist-inspired Berlin Wall was breached in November 1989. Blocks of modern East German-designed flats line the street and a tram line can be seen in the middle of the highway. The DDR-produced Trabant suffered poor performance, but its smoky two-stroke engine regarded with affection as a symbol of the more positive sides of East Germany. Many East Germans streamed into West Berlin and West Germany in their Trabants after the opening of the Berlin Wall. It was in production without any significant change for nearly 30 years. The name Trabant means "fellow traveler" in German.

  • A pet Chihuahua dog looks up to its owner whilst walking along the promenade of Ilfracombe, a seaside resort on the north Devon coast, England. Dressed in pink clothing befitting this ‘toy’ species, the pooch spreads it little legs to steady itself, threatened by an approaching stranger and camera. The Chihuahua (Spanish: Chihuahueño) is the smallest breed of dog and is so named for the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. Chihuahuas come in a wide variety of sizes, head shapes, colors and coat lengths. The Chihuahua’s history is puzzling and there are many theories surrounding the origin of the breed. Both folklore and archeological finds show that the breed originated in Mexico. The most common theory and most likely is that Chihuahuas are descended from the Techichi, a companion dog favoured by the Toltec civilization.

  • From the side of a road in south London, we see a group of naked female mannequins, standing and sitting with furniture on the forecourt of an office supplies business. A clearance sign stands partly-obscured but one’s attention is to the physiques of each model that tends to signify whichever the fashion industry has decreed is the ‘look’ of the decade – whether buxom or skinny – and shop windows are therefore occupied with the clothing shapes of the day. Some women stand in that classic fashion pose, with arms at the side and one leg in front of the other, or sitting with one leg elegantly crossed: All designed to make the clothes they wear look attractive.

  • Young men high up on the hill look out over the city from the Acropolis of Athens. The main buildings on the Acropolis were built by Pericles in the fifth century BC as a monument to the cultural and political achievements of the inhabitants of Athens. The term acropolis means upper city and many of the city states of ancient Greece are built around an acropolis where the inhabitants can go as a place of refuge in times of invasion. It's for this reason that the most sacred buildings are usually on the acropolis. It's the safest most secure place in town. As little as 150 years ago there were still dwellings on the Acropolis of Athens. Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece. It dominates the Attica periphery and is one of the world's oldest cities, as its recorded history spans around 3,400 years. Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy.

  • In strong sunlight, pedestrians in the financial City of London's Threadneedle Street cross the road in front of traffic still wet after recent showers. The words Look Right are seen stencilled in the road surface that glistens in recent rain and shining in light reflected from nearby plate-glass windows. Two male figures are walking away from the kerb towards the centre of a traffic island, surrounded by roadworks barriers. Their long shadows stretch across to the foreground kerb in the heart of the financial City of London, known as the Square Mile after its ancient Roman walled past.

  • Two men and their little dogs in Shoreditch, East London, UK. It is almost as if each man's dog is part of their overall fashion look. Brown and black dogs to match their outfits. In Shoreditch and Hoxton in London, this would not surprise anyone.

  • In light monsoonal rain, a lone pedestrian is seen from a high viewpoint, crossing a zebra crossing with a yellow grid box junction to his right in Central Hong Kong on the last day of British rule. The junction is empty and without any traffic but the word 'Look' is stencilled in white letters for the benefit of unwary pedestrians. An umbrella used by the unrecognisable person is a colour match with the painted striped road markings, identical to the British highway traffic code. The transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the Peoples Republic of China (PRC), often referred to as "The Handover" occurred at midnight on June 30, 1997, signifying the end of British rule, and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China. Hong Kong was once known as 'fragrant harbour' (or Heung Keung) because of the smell of transported sandal wood.

  • Looking downwards from a high vantage point on a hillside, we see one mountain-biker leading a second cyclist as they traverse across a sunlit mountainside near the hamlet of Masecha in the parish of Triesenberg, Liechtenstein. The late afternoon sun is low across the valley and there is a haze that partly obscures and refracts light over the distant landscape. There is snow on the distant mountain peaks but the countryside has the brown look of a snowless winter. Far off villages and hamlets hug the hillsides and golden light floods the scene. The tiny landlocked Principality of Liechtenstein is bordered by the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland and is a winter sports resort, though best known as a tax haven, attracting companies worldwide to register their assets in secrecy.
