The lunchtime meal was being carried along the street when its heat and moisture made it drop through the bottom of a paper bag, turning it upside down and lying perfectly on the pavement as city workers emerged from their offices. Those who saw it in time stepped over the greasy obstacle but the distracted mostly by walking with phones to ears, stepped in it and helping spread it across the pavement.

Government statistics suggest that in 2001, 27% of adults aged 16 and over smoked cigarettes in England; 28% of men and 25% of women. 66% of smokers in England wanted to give up smoking but more than 120,000 deaths were caused by smoking in the UK in 1995; that is, one in five of all deaths.

Urgent action in planned to “cover up” the Walkie Talkie skyscraper in the City after sunlight reflected from the building melted a car on the streets below. Temperatures have been measured in excess of 50 degrees C, and as much as 70 degrees at it's peak. The 525ft building has been renamed the “Walkie Scorchie” after its distinctive concave surfaces reflected a dazzling beam of light which has caused extensive damage to nearby buildings.
