  • A masseuse pushes the sore back of a street patient during the demonstration of an Anma acupressure treatment in a central London street. Anma is Japanese for 'press and rub'. Matching the stance of the practitioner wearing a blue tunic who puts his weight forward into the pressure point of the lumbar area, a young mother holds on to the pushchair of her young child. There are many different methods in Anma, including massage, acupressure, stretching But it is important to note that there are many different versions of anma. Many massage therapists in the west have adapted this old technique to work with their more modern methods. Most common is the stretching, pulling, and pulling of affected areas. This is done to try and achieve the release of muscle tension that in return will help to encourage the proper blood flow and lymph flow.

  • Price list at the Y2K Sauna, Seven Sisters Road, Holloway, London. Scene where a milti million pound vice ring was centred by Josephine Daly. Josephine Daly was thought to have been an eccentric woman who named her house after a pet dog she had buried in the garden. Rarely seen outdoors or driving her white Rolls-Royce, the bespectacled 64-year-old hardly aroused suspicion in Hornsey. But when detectives began investigating one of the capital's biggest vice rings, they soon discovered "Josie" was not what she seemed. Over more than a decade, the quietly spoken Irish woman had built up a prostitution empire based at three saunas which was earning her an alleged £3-4m a year.<br />
Only one of the premises actually had a sauna. Undercover officers were offered a sex menu after paying a £10 entry fee and ushered into a massage room where they made their excuses and left. A surveillance operation showed 1,500 men were going to the brothels at Aqua Sauna, Lanacombe Sauna, and the Ishka Bath every week.

  • "The week of Dunblane." Mindful of the Dunblane massacre that week, a baby massage class takes place at a health clinic in south London. Spread across a matt are six babies of varying ages and sizes whose mums are tenderly stroking their infants' bodies and senses with soft, gentle touches over the head, face, shoulders, arms, chest, stomach and legs which is a recommended way of tactile communication between mother and child. Some children are looking up into their mothers' faces, others are looking elsewhere and one is upset but comforted. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A few miles from the finish line, this long-distance runner has stopped in agony to lean against the walls beneath Tower Bridge during th London Marathon, England. Pushing against the solid wall and stretching his cramped leg muscles, he grimaces in pain as other runners speed past on their way completing their personal race. Pushed to his limits, this man needs to continue a few more Kilometres to claim his medal and to claim victory. But he still has to overcome the pain of an overworked body. When glycogen runs low, the body must then burn stored fat for energy, which does not burn as readily. When this happens, the runner will experience dramatic fatigue. This is called "hitting the wall".

  • Window display figure of a traditional Chinese herbalist's shop in London's West End. The shadows of known cures such as anxiety, depression and hay fever are reflected on the body of this male miniature. One of Chinese herbology’s four natures is the degree of yin and yang, namely cold (extreme yin), cool, warm and hot (extreme yang). The patient's internal balance of yin and yang is taken into account when the herbs are selected. Medicinal herbs of "hot", yang nature are used when the person is thought to be suffering from internal cold that requires to be purged, or when the patient is believed to have a general cold constituency. Sometimes an ingredient is added to offset the extreme effect of one herb.
