During a night shift in the streets near Liverpool Street Station, the lady blows into the device until the officer tells her to stop, having supplied sufficient breath that can be measured for alcohol in milligrams of Oxygen. When the user exhales into the breathalyzer, any ethanol present in their breath is oxidized to acetic acid at the anode. The overall reaction is the oxidation of ethanol to acetic acid and water. The electrical current produced by this reaction is measured, processed, and displayed as an approximation of overall blood alcohol content by the breathalyser. The first practical roadside breath-testing device intended for use by the police was the drunkometer. The drunkometer was developed by Professor Harger in 1938.

HM Prison Askham Grange is a women's open category prison, located in Askham Richard village in North Yorkshire, England. The prison is run by Her Majesty's Prison Service. Askham Grange accepts adult females and female young offenders, and has space for ten mothers to maintain full-time care of their child or children whilst in custody. Inmates tend to have already served three years or more in other prisons, and are transferred to Askham Grange to complete the last part (maximum three years) of their sentence. Because of this the prisons main focus is the re-integration and re-settlement of prisoners into the community and preparation for life after prison. Accommodation in the prison consists mainly of dormitories, though there are some single rooms. All prisoners in the Mother and Baby unit have their own rooms. • The £18.2m Millennium Bridge (a Thames crossing linking the City of London at St. Paul's Cathedral with the Tate Modern Gallery at Bankside) was London's newest river crossing for 100-plus years and coincided with the Millennium, it was hurriedly finished and opened to the public on 10 June 2000 when an estimated 100,000 people crossed it to discover the structure oscillated so much that it was forced to close 2 days later. Over the next 18 months designers added dampeners to stop its wobble but it already symbolised what was embarrassing and failing in British pride. Now the British Standard code of bridge loading has been updated to cover the swaying phenomenon, referred to as Synchronous Lateral Excitation. Here a surveyor stands with legs spread peering into a tripod-mounted theodolite to measure its 370 metres (1,214 ft) steel length.

The three tier system in the UK has levels: 'medium', which includes the rule of six, 'high', which will cover most areas under current restrictions; and 'very high' for those areas with particularly high case numbers. Meanwhile there have been calls by politicians for a 'circuit breaker' complete lockdown to be announced to help the growing spread of the Covid-19 virus.
