  • One man is acclaimed the world over and is synonymous with making hand-carved puppets - Bryan Clarke. He is Chairman of the British Punch & Judy Fellowship and has been a professional Punch & Judy man for well over 50 years, making and supplying puppets from his workshop near Lowestoft on the east coast of England for the last 30 years. Hundreds of Punch & Judy performers throughout the UK and overseas use Bryan's puppets and some are seen here in various stages of production - some finished and hanging from this shed roof while in front of this talented artist, we see blocks of wood still being shaped into the familiar characters that children the world over recognise as Mr Punch and other figures. Mr Clarke smiles at the view in this relaxed portrait taken in 1992.

Street art in the East End of London is an ever changing visual enigma, as the artworks constantly change, as councils clean some walls or new works go up in place of others. While some consider this vandalism or graffiti, these artworks are very popular among local people and visitors alike, as a sense of poignancy remains in the work, many of which have subtle messages.

  • As the Mr Chelsea Body Beautiful talent competition is held on the Kings Road in London, an appreciative woman interviews a contestant. Entrants are handsome males and girls showing their muscles and well-trimmed bodies. The others have hairy chests, pectorals and biceps on-show by these young exhibitionists who parade themselves in the open-air. But this young man is smooth and sell-muscled and he holds up both arms to show his biceps and abdominals (abs) plus, unintentionally (possibly) his well-endowed private parts that are poking from within his Y-front underwear pants.

We see hairy chests, pectorals and biceps on-show by these young exhibitionists who parade themselves in the open-air. Slightly behind them there are also two elderly ladies looking like sisters or perhaps twins. They were once beautiful themselves and sit eagerly on a bench against a wall peering at the handsome young men, wishing they were young again. One holds a walking stick and the other grasps a bottle of wine. It is a scene of young and old, of youth and ageing beauty.

  • It is night-time on Blackpool's Golden Mile, the seaside resort in Lancashire, England. Like an English Las Vegas the neon lights glow to entice the holidaymaker inside where slot machines, games and rides await visitors to lose their vacation money. The Golden Mile is the name given to the stretch of Promenade between the North and South piers. It emerged in the late 19th Century, when small-time fairground operators, fortune-tellers, phrenologists and oyster bars set up in the front gardens of boarding houses, This northern seaside resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. Blackpool is the largest resort in the north of England and visited traditionally by working people from industrial towns and cities during the industrial revolution.

  • Hidden beneath the protective cover is a bronze sculpture by Ivor Roberts-Jones of the former British prime minister Winston Churchill, created on 15th June 2020 in Londons Parliament Square, United Kingdom. The statue was boarded up to protect it from attacks by Black Lives Matter protesters who sprayed graffiti on it over two successive days, including the words was a racist. Despite his achievements, there is evidence to suggest Mr Churchill was a white supremacist. He referred to British imperialism as being for the good of the “primitive” and “subject races”. As a junior member of parliament, Mr Churchill supported Britain’s plan for additional conquests, stressing that “Aryan stock is bound to triumph”.

  • Mr Massoudi, Director of the National Museum of Afghanistan pictured next to a statue recently restored after the Taliban smashed it to pieces. Overall the Taliban smashed 2000 museum exhibits and more famously two colossal Buddhas in Bamiyan ‘because they were "false idols" contrary to Islam. Mr Massouudi with the help of the international community has rebuilt and reopened his museum and is now seeking to recover and restore the many artifacts either looted in the civil war or smashed by the Taliban:<br />
"They took the decision that artefacts such as statues, or anything representing the human figure, was against Sharia Islam . Looking at statues as part of history, is not the same as worshiping them. It was an extremely sad time not just for me, but all museum staff , cultural and educated people in Afghanistan. They destroyed around 2000 artefacts.”
