The child is 8 months old, but extremely small due to chronic malnutrition.  He arrived in the centre 4 days ago and weighed 3.1kg.  He is undergoing an intensive nutrition program and has already gained 0.6kg.  Malnutrition prevents normal  growth and development.

They are in a nursery class room at the GoodWeave centre in Attarkhen, Kathmandu, Nepal.  They are children of carpet factory workers, and have been supported into education by GoodWeave, a charity that works towards getting children out of factories and into education.  Previously these children would have been left unattended in the factory while their parents worked as their low salary could not cover childcare costs. GoodWeave were recipients of the Stars Foundation’s Impact Award.

  • United Nations Park, An illegal slum dwelling which has recently been destroyed by the Nepalese government in  Paurakhi Basti, next to the Bagmati River in the centre of Kathmandu, Nepal.  The shacks were built with scrap plastic, wood and bricks. The settlement has poor security and lacks in clean water, electricity, sanitation and other basic services.  The government forces arrived in the middle of the night and used tear gas to displace the residents before demolishing their homes.

  • A young Nepalese boy stands outside a GoodWeave care home for young people who have been rescued from illegal labour in carpet factories. He had been working in an unlicensed carpet factory in Bhaktapur for two years before a GoodWeave Foundation inspector found him.  The conditions he was subjected to were very poor; he worked from 3am to 8pm, with only 1 hour for lunch and was beaten by his contractor. Because of the time spent on the Loom his fingers did not develop properly and he hasn’t had an education. He is happy now to be living in the GoodWeave centre but wants to go back to his village to live with his parents, who are farmers, and to continue his education. Kathmandu, Nepal.

He is one of the last survivors of the remarkably brave men  who helped defeat the enemy in the jungles of south-east Asia. His company commander described him as "a smiling, hard-swearing and indomitable soldier who in a battalion of brave men was one of the bravest". Born September 1921 - died March 1 2008.

  • Colours are mixed to dye the wool in the factory lab. The factory make its own designs and can make carpets to order as well. They mix their own colours,dye the wool,wash it, weave it according to required designs and export them abroad.The licensee factories fall under three different categories, set by GWF;A for not very likely to hire children, B for more likely and therefor require more often inspections and C for likely to hire children and there for need constant supervision with regular visits any time of the day by GWF inspectors.
