  • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, the breaking news flashes from Fox TV's studios that there are expected to be no more survivors found at Ground Zero. The tragic message reads 'No Signs of Life' in large red letters, read by passers-by along the on the Avenue of the Americas on Manhattan. As the news travels across the building, the camera blurs other TV pictures of live broadcasts with a sense of urgency, speed and desperation in the fruitless search for life.

  • Sign with a train with Homer Plessy Freedom printed on it on 26th February 2020 at Homer Plessy Community School, New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. In 1892, a mixed-race man named Homer Adolph Plessy boarded a train and defiantly sat in the whites only section. He was arrested when he refused to move. He appealed the law that mandated his ejection, and his case eventually made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The justices there not only ruled against Plessy, but issued a now-notorious opinion that established the separate but equal doctrine, which served for more than half a century as the justification for legal segregation in almost all aspects of American life.

  • Half-way across the Gulf of Mexico, between Miami and Cancun in Mexico, Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy's passengers are on the Sun deck to enjoy the first few days sailing on the tropical seas. One of the ship's photographers has passed around a ship's circular life ring buoy through which one busty blonde lady has posed for a photograph and is about to pass it on to her nearest neighbour. She is wearing a garish pink and yellow bikini and is holding the life-saving device so that only her breasts are showing, obscuring her face. We see the name of the ship, Ecstasy, around the ring and the plastic ropes are falling on the lady's cleavage, forming circles around her bosoms. In the background, another cruise traveller (traveler) wears a straw sun hat and is also sitting on a blue sun lounger. We see exposed, tanned skin and it looks baking hot with the tropical sun at its zenith, directly overhead at mid-day. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The line calls its ships The Fun Ships. The MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. She suffered heavy damage in 1998 after the laundry room in the ship's stern caught fire damaging much of her stern and aft section.

  • Soon after setting sail from Miami, en-route to Cancun in Mexico, passengers of Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy liner are told to report on the top sun deck for the obligatory safety drill. Told to fetch their life vests from their respective cabins and suites, they have gathered at various muster points around the vessel to hear the crews' instructions about abandoning ship or the precuations needed to enter the water. We look down from a higher deck to see several dozen tourists on red vests, milling around awaiting the signal to return to their previous activities and entertainment. Operators like US-owned Carnival take these drills very seriously. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. This important time is an opportunity to honour ancestors and spirits through offerings and rituals and to partake in games, sports, feasts, shows, bullfights and courtship. The Hmong are the third largest ethnic group in Laos. One of the most ethnically diverse countries in Southeast Asia, Laos has 49 officially recognised ethnic groups although there are many more self-identified and sub groups. These groups are distinguished by their own customs, beliefs and rituals.

  • New fir tree growth on the site of one of Yellowstone National Park's great fires. The great fire of 1988 devastated huge swathes of forest. In the park, the natural order of life rules. If trees fall, they are left where they are, if a tress falls across a road, the dead tree is cut but only up to the edge of the road. Here we see the new growth beneath the burnt older woods. New replacing old, the regeneration of this wild land.

  • Life is too short to be wasted on the pursuit of happiness, a piece of poetic street art graffiti in the canal underpass at Gravelly Hill Interchange, aka Spaghetti Junction under Coronavirus lockdown, while far fewer vehicles pass overhead on 1st May 2020 in Birmingham, England, United Kingdom. The term Spaghetti Junction was originally used to refer to Gravelly Hill Interchange on the M6 motorway in an article published in the Birmingham Evening Mail on 1 June 1965 the journalist Roy Smith described plans for the junction as like a cross between a plate of spaghetti and an unsuccessful attempt at a Staffordshire knot. Coronavirus or Covid-19 is a new respiratory illness that has not previously been seen in humans. While much or Europe has been placed into lockdown, the UK government has put in place more stringent rules as part of their long term strategy, and in particular social distancing.

He lives with his three brothers. His father lived in this house and his grandfather before him. His father was tailor for king Zahir Shah. Kaka Khalil acts as a community representative and is often required to liaise between the community and Turquoise Mountain. The residents of Murad khane are enjoying improved conditions thanks to the charity . Turquoise Mountain is a charity set up by Rory Stewart. He was asked personally by Prince Charles to take on the task of rebuilding the ancient heart of Kabul. His charity using local labour and the goodwill of the community is substantially into the task and has also set up a school training Afghans in traditional crafts. The area had literally been turned into a rubbish dump, now though using ancient skills the buildings are being restored to their former glory, Stewart is hopeful that he can contribute significantly to the local economy.

  • A woman holds a handful of painted eggs, Hurghis, Bucovina, Romania. In Christian Orthodox countries such as Romania there is a tradition of skilfully painting eggs before Easter. In the villages of Bucovina, the egg painters use a tool called a kishitze, a stick with an iron tip, to apply molten wax in the desired pattern to a blown egg. The egg is then dipped in the lightest colour dye to be used. The egg is then heated and the protective wax melts away and a new pattern can be added, then dipped in a different colour and so on.

  • The remains of the recently relocated Mouchi ethnic minority village of Ban Mouchee Kao, Phongsaly province, Lao PDR. The villagers have returned to remove any useful materials such as wood for construction on their new homes by the road. Rural communities are being impelled to move from swidden to sedentary cultivation and farmers are being exhorted to produce for markets rather than for family consumption. Forests are being logged, rivers are being dammed, large tracts of land are being given over to largely foreign investors, and mining is on the rise. Many villages have been forcibly displaced or moved or have voluntarily relocated in search of better conditions. Proponents argue these movements and consolidations increase the access of rural populations to roads, health and education services. Others might argue that it is to keep an eye on their activities and to foster or impel their incorporation into the emerging market economy.
