The highlight of a high sun glints off the wet pavement as 55 Choreoswitch waterswitches made by Ocmis are linked to 11 pumps located in a purpose built basement plant room beneath the Plaza. The switches are linked to a unit that also controls the 110 colour changing LED lights integrated into the nozzle housings. The pilot is the air show's Flight Operations Director Rod Dean who stands on the wing of this old WW2 warbird fighter of the British Royal Air Force and the refueller man has unhooked the nozzle from the bowser and hauls it across the concrete towards the aircraft. Hazardous and flammable signs are on the truck's rear. Avgas 100LL is a fuel designed for piston engines and is the most commonly used aviation fuel, dyed blue for easy visual identification. 100LL, spoken as "100 low lead", contains a small amount of tetra-ethyl lead (TEL), a lead compound that reduces gasoline's tendency to spontaneously explode (detonation or "knock") under high loads, high temperatures and high pressures - perfect for aerobatic performance flying.

  • Hours before a European Space Agency Ariane 5 rocket launch, a computer monitor displays cryogenic data at the CDL3 launch centre at ESA's Space Centre at Kourou, French Guiana. It shows the status of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellant systems within a Vulcain engine. Stored in the launcher tanks and fed to the engine, they react chemically and expand in the engine combustion chamber then forced through the nozzle to provide the thrust that propels the vehicle into orbit. Cryogenic engines utilise propellants that are liquid under cryogenic conditions, at a temperature much lower than normal ambient conditions (-251°C for hydrogen and -184°C for oxygen). The advantage of cryogenic propellants is that they provide the highest thrust performance.
