  • Western playing in the breakfast room of a motel in Senatobia just off route 55.TN. Part of the attraction of a road trip is just hitting the tarmac and seeing where you will end up. When the budget doesn’t run to a fabulous hotel you can always plump for rough and ready and possibly film noir at the thousands of bargain priced motels around the states. One can normally get clean sheets and a comfortable bed for the night but if not it all adds to the classic road trip experience.

  • The third and last day of the Strike WEF march to Davos on 21st of January 2020 in Davos, Switzerland. The march is coming off the path to cross the main road to Davos. Some of the activists wanted to take the road for political reasons but police blocked them from doing so. No arrests were made. The authorities had refused permission for the march to walk on the road into Davos so many hiked across the mountains from Klosters to get there. The march is a three day protest against the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos. The activists want climate justice and think that The WEF is for the worlds richest and political elite only.

The trick of the road trip experience in Southern USA is to get off the main highways as often as possible: it’s the best way to meet the real America. Despite the stereotype of red neck America that is portrayed you are more likely to meet a friendly and hospitable folk interested in you as you are in them.

Southwark was awarded £1.3 million by TfL from its Streetspace funding pot, which aims to rapidly transform London’s streets to help facilitate social distancing, cycling, and walking as lockdown eases. Dulwich Village low traffic neighbourhood was granted £23,000 for the first phase and £110,000 for the second. As part of its ‘our healthy streets’ initiative, the council had already earmarked the Village as an LTN.

  • A 1960 Bentley S2 Continental drives down the Kings Road, Chelsea. A couple pass along the street in west London with the roof down, the sun glinting off their bumper (fender) and onto them on a perfect late-summer afternoon. The scene echoes a bygone era when drivers and passengers would parade down here to show off their motors - this still happens today. The Bentley S2 (and the high-performance Bentley Continental S2 derived from it) was a luxury car produced by Bentley from 1959 until 1962. 1,920 standard and long-wheelbase car chassis were built between 1959 and 1962. Almost all were fitted with standard factory bodywork. A number had coachbuilt bodies by Park Ward, Hooper, H. J. Mulliner & Co., and James Young.

  • Deep in the West Sussex countryside are a group of Territorial Army soldiers. They have stopped in a remote lane to consult their Ordnance Survey maps during a day of learning to navigate with maps and compasses. Over a weekend learn the skills needed to be part-time army volunteers known as the TA and have far to go. Together they look at maps and argue where they should go next. Looking on with mild amusement is their senior officer who accompanies them to assess their leadership skills and initiative. Behind them a road sign tells them the road ahead is a dead end to traffic. It is a very English summer landscape of lush green vegetation and grasses. The TA work as part of Britain’s reserve land forces. Together with the Regular Army they provide support at home and overseas including Iraq and Afghanistan. .

  • Near the junction of the 400 to Buckhead, the 401 highway divides and splits during afternoon rush-hour traffic which slows and builds up so that vehicles and cars back-up as they head home and out of Downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The inner median is coned off during some construction work which slows the traffic even more. Crossing the 5-lane road comes a train of Atlanta's own mass-transit system, the MARTA network and it approaches the overpass with care. We see the infrastructure of a modern metropolis at the busiest time of day when the exodus to get home puts the roads and feeder lanes under the most pressure. Fortunately, the weather is fine with good visibility making drivers' journeys a little shorter and more tolerable but it shows too America’s habit and dependency on car culture.

  • Staff carry a covered buffet lunch, across a road in central London and towards a business event around the corner on 7th June 2016. The smartly-dressed trio wearing black all walk in unison along the street just off Bond Street and each carry two salvers of sandwiches and other snack.

  • Ignoring a red pedestrian light, a schoolboy dashes out into commuter traffic at dawn on a foggy morning in south London. Despite the dangers of negotiating a busy road, the lad runs off the pavement and into the path of the oncoming cars. It is dawn at around 8.45 on this winter morning, a dark and miserable time of day in this south London suburb from where Londoners start their journeys north into the City. Cars and trucks wait for the lights to change, their headlights shining in the dispersing fog on Denmark Hill.

  • Pedestrian and cyclist on rental Boris Bike in a Soho side-street, patterned with purple. During a bust lunchtime in London's Soho many pedestrians and cyclists pass-by a splash of purple that plays across a side street off Charing Cross Road. Produced by reflective coloured panels on an adjacent building - and after a period of light rain in the capital, the vivid rays of colour are a welcome oasis of hues. Motorcycles are parked with mirrors showing the street beyond. A lady walks across the landscape with a cigarette in hand and a male cyclist pedals past on a "Boris bike" - one of the rental bicycles that can be hired for 30-minute journeys across the capital.

  • In front of amused elderly passers-by, street performers strut their stuff during a Gay Pride parade of homosexuals and transgender cross-dressers. One wears a bright red and gold costume with feathers just off the road while another wears a dancer's sequined leotard. Gay pride or LGBT pride is the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance.

  • With the words 'We will never accept a united Ireland' and another quote 'For God and Ulster' we see a detail of a political painting in a street off the Shankhill Road in Belfast, Northern Ireland. This Loyalist mural may have been drawn by a paramilitary artist, whose handiwork is the crest of the protestant Ulster Defence Association (UDA) and the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) the organisations behind many a sectarian action against neighbouring catholic supporters of the Irish republican Army (IRA). In loyalist areas, the red, white and blue of the British Union Jack is painted on kerbs, houses and railings to signify peoples’ allegiance to the crown, having historically followed the 17th century activities of King William of Orange against Catholics.

  • On a brick wall is a painted red hand that grips an Armalite automatic weapon which has been painted on to a street wall of a house off the protestant Shankhill Road in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The red hand is actually better-known as The Red Hand Defenders (RHD), a Northern Irish paramilitary group formed in 1998 and composed largely of Protestant hardliners from loyalist groups observing a cease-fire. It is composed of members of the Ulster Defence Association (largely those who once belonged to the now disbanded 2nd Battalion, C Company) and Loyalist Volunteer Force, most of whom are still part of the latter organisation.

  • With hands in their pockets and walking in step, three friends pass along a street off the Shankhill Road in Belfast, Northern Ireland, have just passed beneath a Loyalist mural drawn by a paramilitary artist, whose handiwork is based on a well-known representation of a kneeling gunman shouldering a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) and aiming past the crest of the protestant Ulster Defence Association (UDA), the organisation behind many a sectarian action against neighbouring catholic supporters of the Irish republican Army (IRA). In loyalist areas, the red, white and blue of the British Union Jack is painted on kerbs, houses and railings to signify peoples’ allegiance to the crown, having historically followed the 17th century activities of King William of Orange against Catholics.
