  • Employees in a central London office work dilligently alongside the reminders of vacations that colleagues and friends have taken. Picture postcard souvenirs have been lined up as a display of the perfect holiday when they have returned to work to put their shoulders to the grindstone. It is a scene of wishful thinking, of 'wish you were here!' and of looking forward to the next break from the toil of their careers so by showing the idyllic locations of their dreams with these visual reminders, can they imagine the beauty of these places: Tenby in south Wales, the Lake District in northern England and a country hall set in, perhaps, the Scottish hills. An out of focus worker stares intensely into his PC, perhaps thinking of escapism and a life outside these four walls.

  • Four office workers are outside their place of employment in central London for a quick cigarette break. Puffing guiltily on their fags that have sought a dark place on the pavement beneath some shelter although it is warm enough for two of the men to wear only shirts and ties while the only lady present is in a jumper. One member of the group draws heavily on his cigarette, a sign of his addiction and enjoyment of taking a five or ten-minute pause from his office job. A recent report showed smokers each lose an average of 30 minutes a day from their workplaces to satisfy their habit. The average smoker takes at least three breaks from the office, each lasting around 10 minutes, research for the Benenden Healthcare Society found. The healthcare group estimates that 290,000 working days are being lost by people leaving their office to smoke.

The Post Office Railway, also known as Mail Rail, was a narrow-gauge driverless underground railway in London, built by the Post Office with assistance from the Underground Electric Railways Company of London, to move mail between sorting offices. Inspired by the Chicago Tunnel Company it operated from 3 December 1927 until 31 May 2003. It ran east–west from Paddington Head District Sorting Office in the west to the Eastern Office at Whitechapel in the east, a distance of 6.5 miles (10.5 km). It had eight stations, the largest of which was underneath Mount Pleasant, but by 2003 only three stations remained in use because the sorting offices above the other stations had been relocated.

  • Using a system of ropes and cables, a team of window cleaners wipe plate-glass and lower themselves from a City of London office block in the heart of the capital's financial district otherwise known as the Square Mile, after its circling Roman wall.
