  • Seventeen officer cadets march in line wearing full dress uniform with their rifles on shoulders past guests and VIPs at their passing out parade in the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. The recently-graduated soldiers march in a near-perfect line looking over their right shoulders towards their commanding officers and VIP guests which sometimes includes Her Majesty the Queen. We see every face clearly and notice their different heights and sizes. Sharp focus is centred on the smallest man in the parade. The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS), commonly known simply as Sandhurst, is the British Army officer initial training centre. Sandhurst is prestigious and has had many famous alumni including Sir Winston Churchill, King Abdullah II of Jordan, Sultan Qaboos of Oman and, more recently, Prince Harry and Prince William. All British Army officers, and many from elsewhere in the world, are trained at Sandhurst. RMA Sandhurst was formed in 1947, from a merger of the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich (which trained officers for the Royal Artillery and Royal Engineers from 1741 to 1939) and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst.

  • Seen from behind and from a low angle, we see the towering, imposing figure of a City of London Police officer while on duty in Trafalgar Square during England v USA World Cup match. At the half-time pause in the game, the officer stands to watch over this location noted for political protest and sporting celebrations. On this occasion though, there is no large TV screen to avoid social disorder and the City of London Police who usually patrol the capital's old financial district are helping the larger Met Police force during this sporting summer. Seemingly below him, is the 5.5 m (18 ft) statue of Admiral Nelson on its 46 m (151 ft) Foggintor granite column, built between 1840 and 1843 to commemorate the heroic Napoleonic war sailor Horatio Nelson's death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

  • A woman driver is breathalysed at the roadside by an officer from the City of London Police. During a night shift in the streets near Liverpool Street Station, the lady blows into the device until the officer tells her to stop, having supplied sufficient breath that can be measured for alcohol in milligrams of Oxygen. When the user exhales into the breathalyzer, any ethanol present in their breath is oxidized to acetic acid at the anode. The overall reaction is the oxidation of ethanol to acetic acid and water. The electrical current produced by this reaction is measured, processed, and displayed as an approximation of overall blood alcohol content by the breathalyser. The first practical roadside breath-testing device intended for use by the police was the drunkometer. The drunkometer was developed by Professor Harger in 1938.

The highly-skilled engineer is known as a 'Blue' but the 'Reds' discuss flight plans. Eleven trades skills are imported from some sixty that the RAF employs and teaches. It is mid-day and only their flying boots and red legs are seen with the RAF roundel emblem is on the underside of the wing. The better-educated officers in the armed forces enjoy a more privileged lifestyle than their support staff. In the aerobatic squadron, the Blues outnumber the pilots 8:1. Without them, the Red Arrows couldn't fly. Some of the team's Hawks are 25 years old and their air frames require constant attention, with increasingly frequent major overhauls due.

  • Standing against strong Autumnal afternoon light, two police officers from an unknown constabulary, guard one entrance to the venue where the Conservative (Tory) Party Conference is being held, at the Bournemouth International Centre that overlooks the sea in Dorset, England. In 1990, the terrorist threat came from Irish Republicans (IRA) rather than Islamist extemists and credible threats proved to be correct, that these idealists wanted to assassinate Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Police cordons were therefore an efficient method of controlling and restricting access to those without the proper delegates' or media accreditation. The most striking figure is the male officer in the foreground whose profile is prominent because of his traditional police helmet.
