  • Looking at International Arrivals of Heathrow airport's Terminal 5. Designed by architects Richard Rogers Partnership the controversial building opened with chaotic scenes on 27/3/08. British Airways passengers faced baggage disruption after a 6 year construction project that has seen the British public divided over the role of commercial aviation. At a cost of £4.3bn, the project was Britain's longest planning inquiry which lasted four years but finally employing a total of 60,000 workers. 30,000 square metres of glass in walls; 80,000 tonnes of steel were used - 17,000 in the roof alone; 5,000 doors, 800 toilets, 20,000 power sockets and 1,700 miles of cable; 60 new aircraft stands, including 14 for the Airbus A380; 13km of tunnels were bored for the state-of-the-art baggage handling to handle 12,000 bags per hour.

  • In mid-day heat of the arid Sonoran desert sits the gutted remains of a Lockheed Tri-Star airliner at the storage facility at Mojave, California. Here, the fate of the world’s retired civil airliners is decided by age or a cooling economy and are either cannibalised for still-working parts or recycled for scrap, their aluminium fuselages worth more than their sum total. After a lifetime of safe commercial flight, wings are clipped and cockpits sliced apart by huge guillotines, cutting through the sleek curves. Elsewhere, Jumbo jets, Airbuses and assorted Boeings sit abandoned in the scrub minus their bellies, legs or wings like dying birds. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • A multi-ethnic crowd enjoys a heatwave in the Herne Hill lido, south London, England. A mixture of cultural backgrounds and ethnicities celebrate the warm weather together either in the waters or on the poolside concrete. The water is blue and the skin is either white, sunburned pink or black afro-Carribean. The laughter is genuine with these Londoners relishing this local open-air mecca for healthy sun worship. This lido was opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Brockwell Lido was designed by HA Rowbotham and TL Smithson of the London County Council's Parks Department to replace Brockwell Park bathing pond.

  • A detail of freshly-picked English oysters opened using a 'shucker' knife. English Falmouth Estuary oysters have become highly sought-after around European restaurants and we see a freshly-caught specimen still in its shell after being landed from a traditional Falmouth antique working sail boat (fishing without mechanical power is a rule on this local fishery) that still dredge harvested oysters from the river bed using traditional methods unchanged since Victorian times. The fisherman's muddy fingers can be seen lifting (or shuck) the crustacean slightly from the shell with an old oyster knife to display this wild, native Fal oyster which is known for its distinctive sweet, fresh and delicate flavour.

  • A mother holds her young son high into the air while waste deep in the warm waters of Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill, south London, SE24. It is a fine summer's day and the pool is quiet before a rush of other families return for another day at their local pool. The mum throws the lad up and he squeels with delight at being thrust so high above the water's surface. This lido was opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. • Pedestrians walk in spring sunshine over the newly re-opened Millennium Bridge over London's River Thames, England. The £18.2m bridge, central London's first new river crossing (from tate Modern to St Paul's Cathedral) for more than a century, was opened on 10 June 2000 but was shut three days later because of what engineers called the "synchronised footfall" - the swaying effect of hundreds of people stepping in unison. 91 dampers similar to shock absorbers were fitted allowing its re-opening in early 2002. We see here hundreds of visitors to the Bankside walking north and south across this convenient piece of engineering. Coincidentally, they walk on the same right side as drivers in the UK. Two businessmen walk closest to the viewer but elsewhere people look like tourists and pleasure-seekers.

  • Snatching a well-earned lunchtime snooze, two young office workers in Trinity Park in the City of London. The young man on the left has his arms folded across his chest, his dark pinstripe suit apparently a little warm on this fine day. To his left is another youngish gentleman who looks less formal: his jacket opened and his tie crooked while his open mouth might emit snores in this public space. The bench which is owned by the Corporation of London has pigeon droppings on the back and arm rest but these two tired people care less about animal hygiene than the chance to steal a few precious minutes sleep before re-entering their office buildings and returning to desks.

  • As a cyclist pedals his way along a path, a man enjoys late afternoon sunshine in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London England. Seen from a central hill in this Victorian-designed open space, there are the terraced housing and larger tenement buildings behind that rise above the tree line in this undulating landscape. The person on the bicycle has been caught between two tree trunks as he approaches the man relaxing on the park bench and another pedestrian is seen further in the distance walking near a red car. It is scene of serenity among the urban sprawl of a capital city, where quiet places are precious and idyllic corners of greenery are highly-sought after. The Brockwell Hall Park Estate was created and landscaped in 1811. It was purchased for the people of Lambeth & Southwark and opened as a public park in 1892 by Lord Rosebery.
