  • A closed and abandoned primary school playground in Oban, Scotland. At near ground level, we see across the broken surface of a play area where young children once played outside between lesson in this western Scottish town. Three palm trees have been painted on a wall beyond the overgrown plants grow between the cracks on concrete and roughly-made tarmac. It is a dystopian scene, one of hope and optimism and tropical optimism and decline and squalid reality.

The three young people wear stylish street fashion - heavy coats with fur-lined hoods and gloves. Their number is also echoed by the cones preventing any car or bikes from parking in this space outside the construction site, hidden from view. The landscape is of youth and optimism, of style in an urban setting.

  • A Haitian sees the bright side as she sits outside her shelter erected opposite the Palace in Cham De Mars. The choice of cloth for her shack is symbolic and many Haitians are grateful for the aid and support from the US. some commentators, however, believe the relationship with the US two hundred miles away, is what needs to be looked at if things are to improve. One Haitian, Jocelyn, tells me: "They (The American government) take with one hand and give with the other. They swamped Haiti with cheap rice imports putting farmers out of business and forcing them into the capital's slums where they have been aid dependent ever since"

  • The words Good as Gold are written on the top of a Victorian building in Southwark, south London. With blue sky and clouds above, we see an urban street message sprayed on the former warehouse near Waterloo. “Good as gold” or “as good as gold” are common English expressions meaning something is genuine or reliable. Referring to people, particularly children, they usually mean well behaved. “Good as gold” is one of numerous figures of speech involving gold as a desirable standard of some kind. The expression is a simile, an analogy used to describe something by comparing it to something else. The word “gold” itself is one of the oldest words in the English language.

  • With a large hand from her worried mother gently caressing her head, a tiny premature new-born born baby sleeps on its side with an oxygen tube in its nose, while gathering strength in her incubator at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, London, England. In her warm cot, a toy bear looks on in the corner and a poem writen on a card from the baby's parents has been attached to the plastic wall. It is a tender moment of hope, that this precious young human life can continue to grow into adulthood and be loved by all. The Royal London Hospital is one of London's oldest, having been founded in 1740 and is a major teaching hospital in Whitechapel, East London.

"It was twenty-four hours after the quake before I saw my boyfriend. There were no communication networks and I had no way of knowing if he was dead or alive. When I saw him, I was so relieved I just jumped on him! Now we live in this camp under sheets held up with timber. It is very hard to get shelter from the sun,and when the rains come there will be no protection at all. We need proper tents but even one month on we have been unable to get help. We have no privacy here, it's always noisy. We don't even have chance for a cuddle. It would be great to get a proper mattress, but we don't even have rice so that's not high up in our priorities."

  • A couple of mixed-race have put their heads through the apertures made in a painting that depicts Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, on the Palace Pier at Brighton, on the south coast of England. The faces peep through this traditional attraction that few can resist, even in the 21st century. The man’s face looks disturbingly incongruous in the place where the Prince Consort’s white German character would be. There is a message here of a changing multi-cultural British society where these friends or partners are from other ethnic backgrounds and where mixed-marriages are now commonplace, as opposed to the Victorian era when attitudes to racism and race-relations were vastly different.

  • Days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, posters starting appearing at strategic locations in Manhattan that either showed the faces of missing citizens, lost in the ruins of terrorist devastation or with patriotic rhetoric expressing hope, fate or anger and retribution as Americans sought to express their emotions and unity. But after overnight rain, the inks and dyes of home-printed pictures streaked and ran obliterating these messages and victims’ faces. DNA samples were taken at the Armory so human remains might be identified so it was a point of focus for those with missing relatives who attached thousands of posters to walls with pictures and messages to loved-ones in the hope of being reunited.
