  • As the Statten Island ferry nears the business district and skyscrapers of Manhattan Island, a New York City Police Department (NYPD) police officer stands guard at the very front (the bow) of the boat. It is approximately ten days after the 9/11 attacks and with pistol safely holstered and arms folded, he can see the settling dust from Ground Zero beyond the safety chain, where the Twin Towers once stood. It is a bright day and behind the policeman, commuters are already returning to work because normality is a priority for those affected by disruption and fear.

  • On the edge of an old Soviet parade ground, peeling murals show an instruction mural for guarding prison camps seen in this army boot camp in the former East German peninsular called Halbinsel Wustrow near Rostock. For the benefit of recruits or as reminders of Soviet discipline, the picture shows a soldier standing at the barbed wire of a generic Gulag holding his AK-47 weapon and dressed in fur hat and uniform from that era. Perhaps those training here were eventually to guard political prisoners though it is a reminder of a fallen ideology. Wustrow was once a WW2 German anti-aircraft artillery position then housed civilian refugees before the eventual Soviet occupation of the former DDR during the Cold War, up until 1990 and the fall of communism and the Berlin Wall. The camp was ransacked and all its assets stripped before its desertion that summer.

Ironically, warm-ups perform a preliminary act before a TV show is recorded to literally warm an audience into non-spontaneous laughter to help a comedy's atmosphere - albeit with the help of prompt signs like these. • Seen through the window of a generic central London restaurant, we see a family, possibly tourists, seated in full view of the street's passers-by, while ordering their dinners from a waiter. The man is standing over them, writing down a mother's orders while at the next row of seats, a man is also telling his own waiter what his dinner will be. An Open sign has been placed to attract more trade into this business, a favourite among tourists visiting Theatreland in the capital's West End. It is early evening and the background street is dark with other businesses illuminated. Other couples and customers are also sitting at tables waiting for their food to arrive and in the foreground, a young man sips a glass of Coke from a straw.

  • Seen from a high viewpoint, we overlook loading of roll cages at the Sainsbury's 700,000 sq ft (57,500sq m) supermarket warehouse and distribution depot at Waltham Point London England. This is the largest of 10 distribution centres using an automated ordering system for receiving food direct from suppliers by truck through 170 dock doors. Long-distance vehicles depart every two minutes, 24 hours a day, 364 days a year to 80 UK stores and handling 2.5m supermarket cases a week. The temperature is just above freezing point in a series of chill, ambient and frozen chambers. Real-time ordering means that stores can obtain requested stock within hours. Food orders are conveyed (at 2 meters a second) with sorter systems that group products together, ordering them to favour the layout of specific stores, optimising how the shelves are stacked.

He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years, before being shot in Buchenwald on Adolf Hitler's orders in 1944. The Ernst Thälmann Pioneer Organisation, consisting of the Young Pioneers and the Thälmann Pioneers, was a youth scouting-styled organisation of schoolchildren aged 6 to 14, in East Germany. Its motto was" "Für Frieden und Sozialismus seid bereit – Immer bereit" ("For peace and socialism be ready - always ready") but the Pioneers were disbanded in 1989 after early protests here in Leipzig at the same time as the Berlin Wall and the Socialist state's fall.
