  • Looking up from the ground to the underside of a jet airliner passing overhead in bright skies, blurred purposely using a slow camera speed, creating a separate, staggered double-image. Viewed through the foliage and flowers of a garden shrub, the plane descends in slightly hazy skies above south London, where aircraft pass overhead a few thousand feet above suburban homes, the plane is seen as a diagonal, edging across the airspace on its way to the runways at Heathrow airport, approximately 20 miles to the West. The jet is generic, minus airline markings though we see it is a twin-engined model, its two powerplants mounted beneath its wings.

  • The outline of a generic airliner passes overhead as it takes-off at London Heathrow airport. With the strong shape of its aerodynamic surfaces, its wings and lowered flaps to gain maximum lift at this sea level atmosphere. The jet's undercarriage wheels are still lowered and the circular jet engines are clearly defined by strong sunlight. The airline operator is anonymous as is the manufacturer of the aircraft as it contunues its journey under blue skies to a faraway destination.

  • Overhead flyovers cross in this mega-junction of the Yan’an Road Central Elevated Expressway, and the Chongqing North/South Elevated Expressway in Shanghai, China. These huge motorway systems cut across and up through Shanghai creating fast routes for vehicles. The vast amounts of housing that was removed to make space for the Yan’an Expressway alone, displaced some 200,000 people, who will have been re-housed in high-rise apartment blocks in the suburbs. Their old homes would have been dwarfed by this monstrous construction of roads. Lit up at night this is a classic view of Shanghai’s futuristic approach to it’s massive and swift development.

  • Having just disembarked from a Carnival Cruise ship at the port of Miami, Florida, two tourists carry and pull their baggage along to a waiting coaches that will transport them for onward journeys. Comically they also wear wide sombrero hats bought in Cancun during their vacation around the Gulf of Mexico, the destination of this popular cruise line whose base is Miami. Stitched with garish colours the souvenirs provide shelter from the overhead tropical sun though the woman of this couple chooses to hang hers over a shoulder and keeps her original hat on her head. This may be the couples' honeymoon or just a special annual holiday away from the kids or a humdrum lifestyle where the weather is far from the intensity of Florida, a favourite resort for Americans not liking foreign travel.

  • A father supports his son on his shoulders as a giant four-engined airliner passes directly overhead, about to land at London's Heathrow airport, England. Seen from a low angle, we see the graphic cruciform shape of the aircraft as it screams past two powerful airfield landing lights that help guide arriving aircraft to the runway. The backlit scene is largely monochrome apart from the boys red t-shirt and yellow-faced watch which are lit by flash, underexposing the overcast sky. Prior to 9/11, British airport authorities and police tolerated plane spotters near runway fences but with heightened terrorist alerts, these enthusiasts are told to move on or face arrest. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • Hawk jets of the Red Arrows, Britain's RAF aerobatic team display over beach using quad bikes as display datum (centre). Passing overhead, there are two beach guards sitting just 100 feet below the passing jets who perform in front of an unseen crowd behind the sands. The team are using this coastal reference point as display datum (centre) during their display, a show-stopping manoeuvre of their 25-minute air show display routine. 'Datum' is an axis on which the Red Arrows focus their displays, from where the whole show is visible at the crowd's centre. The bikes are but one of a series of datum points selected by the team leader as a geographical point from which to navigate. Since 1965 the squadron has flown over 4,000 shows in 52 countries an important part of Britain's summer events where they perform their manoeuvres in front of massed crowds.

  • Half-way across the Gulf of Mexico, between Miami and Cancun in Mexico, Carnival Cruise's Fun Ship Ecstasy's passengers are on the Sun deck to enjoy the first few days sailing on the tropical seas. One of the ship's photographers has passed around a ship's circular life ring buoy through which one busty blonde lady has posed for a photograph and is about to pass it on to her nearest neighbour. She is wearing a garish pink and yellow bikini and is holding the life-saving device so that only her breasts are showing, obscuring her face. We see the name of the ship, Ecstasy, around the ring and the plastic ropes are falling on the lady's cleavage, forming circles around her bosoms. In the background, another cruise traveller (traveler) wears a straw sun hat and is also sitting on a blue sun lounger. We see exposed, tanned skin and it looks baking hot with the tropical sun at its zenith, directly overhead at mid-day. Carnival was a pioneer in the concept of cheaper and shorter cruises. Its ships are known for their Las Vegas decor and entertainment. The line calls its ships The Fun Ships. The MS Ecstasy is a Fantasy class cruise ship featuring two pools, whirlpools, a variety of dining options, nightclubs, a casino, and duty-free shopping. After Hurricane Katrina, she spent six months in New Orleans serving as quarters for refugees and relief workers. She suffered heavy damage in 1998 after the laundry room in the ship's stern caught fire damaging much of her stern and aft section.

It is night time and the ramp (or aircraft parking tarmac) is illuminated by yellow artificial light with the bridge itself, lit my overhead fluorescent tubes that give a blue-green tint above the mens' heads who watch the nose of a departing airliner. It is slowly taken backwards on its way to the runway take-off position with its passengers on-board. We see only the fuselage, wings and part of its engine cowlings but not the undercarriage wheels, nor the ground itself. The men look as if they are floating in mid-air, being disembodied from the rest of the airfield's equipment.

  • On a grey day in the metropolis of Hong Kong, a giant airliner belonging to an Asian airline passes overhead, seemingly just over the roofs of apartment buildings and offices. The aircraft is nearly at the point of touching down on the runway which is just beyond this street in Kowloon district in the days when Hong Kong was still a British colony and before its handover to Chinese law. The dominating shape of the jet is flying into the former airport called Kai Tak whose runway jutted out into the city’s harbour before the airfield was closed and a new location was opened in an outlying island. We look up to see a wide expanse of overcast sky with the red vertical Cantonese characters of a local business and which echoes the red beacon on the plane’s belly that flashes during the last moments of flight before the actual landing.

Behind him a monorail transports holidaymakers around the resort. Wearing the large letter B for Butlins on his red vest, the young lad sucks on his whistle held between his lips and prominently, the words 'Made in England' have been tattooed on his left shoulder - as if a statement for his patriotic ideals but also for those of Butlins - an institution for the British working classes who after the war had the opportunity to spend their summers at special resorts in seaside towns that provided entertainment and fun. Butlins and other camp businesses went into decline when the masses preferred Spanish vacations but have since been revived as travel costs have again soared and holidays at home are once again popular.

As the water hits the sea defence wall, the seaside town is battered by southerly winds that bring with them huge breakers across the promenade. Adventurous and foolhardy people brave these conditions and stay for as long as possible at the railings then jump out at the last moment before getting doused in salt spray. This man carries on walking and thinks that by bending down, the sea will pass overhead.

  • An aerial view of an unidentified island community seen from a regional aircraft passing overhead atolls and islands, a few miles to the north Malé, capital of the Indian Ocean Republic of the Maldives. We see the perfectly clear blue sea surrounding an island of white coral beach sand, a harbour, holiday apartments and importantly coastal defence barriers that may defend against rising sea levels as global warming makes sea level locations like this vulnerable to flooding. The Maldives comprise of twenty-six atolls, featuring 1,192 coral islands of which 80 are holiday resorts with 200 inhabited by indigenous communities. This Islamic nation of 298 sq km (115 sq miles), lie seven hundred kilometres (435 miles) south-west of Sri Lanka.

Echoing the birds' wings, the young lady has an arm outstretched and she entices the birds to flock around her head and the avian creatures swarm excitedly in the air above. In the background is the expanse of Westminster Bridge with the Houses of Parliament and the tall clock tower containing the Big Ben bell.

  • The Sky Pod Bar in the Sky Garden of the Walkie Talkie building in the City of London. We look down on to customers awaiting service at this stylish place to drink and eat. 20 Fenchurch Street is a commercial skyscraper in London that takes its name from its address on Fenchurch Street, in the historic City of London financial district. It has been nicknamed The Walkie-Talkie because of its distinctive shape. Construction was completed in spring 2014, and the top-floor 'sky garden' was opened in January 2015. The 34-storey building is 160 m (525 ft) tall, making it the fifth-tallest building in the City of London. Designed by architect Rafael Viñoly and costing over £200 million.

  • RAF fundraisers watch the Red Arrows, Britain's RAF aerobatic team during a private display high above RAF Akrotiri. Spectators at the Princess Margaret Hospital (TPMH) on the Akrotiri peninsula, about 4 kilometres from the RAF Station at Akrotiri, admire the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, as they perform one of their first public shows of the year. RAF staff and patients are allowed on to the grass outside the hospital building for this free show, given in honour of local charity fund-raisers of the Cyprus-based RAF Association whose guests form one of the smallest crowds to watch a Red Arrows display. Since 1965 the squadron have flown over 4,000 shows in 52 countries and are an important part of Britain's summer events where aerobatics aircraft perform their manoeuvres in front of massed crowds.

  • During the evening rush hour, hundreds of rail commuters are queueing to board a Thameslink train which has just arrived on the platform at Farringdon Station in Clerkenwell, London England. Standing 10-deep, they patiently wait the next ride home southbound during a tube strike forced the closure of underground stations and making workers take alternative routes. Looking down from a high bridge we see the train's roof and the heads of those delayed and inconvenienced. It is another miserable journey home.

  • Beneath sunlight that filters down through a glass roof, two employees walk through the bright atrium at the British Airways' corporate headquarters at Waterside at Harmondsworth near Heathrow Airport. Passing-by the full-size undercarriage of a Boeing 747, the workers make their way through the bright and clean atmosphere of this airline's nerve-centre, an operational and planning complex designed by architect, Niels Torp, a champion of humanist modern design. It comprises 6 roughly U-shaped buildings with courtyards and lakes stretching out into the landscape. The central spine is the street, complete with village style shops and restaurants. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • A Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340 crosses the perimeter fence at Heathrow Airport on its way to an international destination. Seen from below, the passing Jumbo takes-off and climbs under full take-off power over the surrounding airfield security fence. Its razor-wire is an effective deterrent against protesters or terrorists and symbolises the lengths that airport authorities (in this case BAA) need go to to ensure their property is safe. The aircraft is seen almost entangled in the secure wire as if passing through the mesh. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • Separated by colour-coded floors, employees of the auditing company Ernst & Young, participate in informal meetings in E & Y's Norman Foster-designed 385,000 square foot E & Y's European headquarter offices at More London, London England. Those on the top blue level 8 may be more senior to those below on the 7th purple storey of this tall, upright scene of modernity. It is busier on the upper floor then the two men beneath. Subsequent levels are vacant. Architecturally, the term atrium comes from Latin: a large and light central hall or reception of a house where guests were greeted. The depth and height of all levels from near the top to almost the bottom give a sense of vertigo, a dizzying perspective on seniority and success as opposed to lower-ranking middle-management.

The earliest mention of St. Alphage goes back to the 1100s but was closed by act of Parliament in the late 1500s, one of the many victims of the dissolution of the monasteries - then damaged further in the Blitz.
