  • Leader of the Labour party, Neil Kinnock makes his infamous speech during the Labour Party election rally on 1st April 1992 in Sheffield, England. In the 1992 election, Labour made considerable progress – reducing the Conservative majority to just 21 seats. It came as a shock to many when the Conservatives won a majority, but the triumphalism perceived by some observers of a Labour party rally in Sheffield together with Kinnocks performance on the podium may have helped put floating voters off.

  • Hidden in a wooden hut, a group of bird-spotting ornithologists peer through binoculars at the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) rreserve at Rainham Marshes, Essex England. Watching dozens of wintering birds, the group are intensely looking through their optical equipment in anticipation of seeing rare breeds at this Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), a wetland alongside the River Thames, 20 miles from Central London. A narrow slit is open to keep them hidden from sight so leaning on elbows and with a guide sheet in front to identify particular species, they concentrate on their hobby. The RSPB has 200 nature reserves covering almost 130,000 hectares, home to 80% of Britain's rarest or most threatened bird species. Its role is to speak out for birds and wildlife, tackling the problems that threaten the environment.

  • A customized caravan sits in the damp woods at the Faslane Peace Camp, Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Matt Bury, 52, is one of the camp's 10 full time residents and has been living in this trailer for a year. Painted harlequin-styled diamonds adorn the walls of the van in a personal artistic statement. Calor gas bottles lie on the ground and weeds grow around this semi-permanent site. Faslane Peace Camp is a makeshift political activists' site alongside HM Naval Base Clyde where Trident nuclear deterrent missiles and Vanhuard Class submarines dock. The camp has been occupied continuously, in a few different locations since 12 June 1982. Image taken for the 'UK at Home' book project published 2008.

  • David Reynolds (aka Eco) is a long-term activist, campaigner in the peace movement and resident of the Faslane Peace Camp, Scotland. His home of three years is called the Earth Shack and is largely re-cycled from scrap and garbage found locally on rubbish tips. Eco leans against his garden fence holding a mug of coffee this chilly Sunday morning. Signs of his political beliefs adorn the place: CND logos and Peace on Earth statements. His mother was a ‘Carnie’ (after the word Carnival, someone working on the fairgrounds) so perhaps it’s from her that he more enjoys an alternative outdoor camping lifestyle after a few years in the army. Faslane Peace Camp is a makeshift site alongside Faslane Naval base where Trident nuclear deterrent missiles and submarines dock. The camp has been occupied continuously, in a few different locations, since 1982.

  • Hooded peninitents (Nazarenos) during Seville's annual Easter Holy Week (Semana Santa de Sevilla) one of the most important traditional events of the city. The annual celebrations mark the story of Christ's crucifixion and the Nazarenos walk through the historic Andalucian city in front of the devout in a series of processions. Several hundred members of the 57 religious brotherhoods (or Hermandades) from many of city churches accompany giant floats (Pasos) depicting the road to Calvary. The brotherhoods (founded in the mid 14th century) are associations of Catholic laypersons organised for the purpose of performing public acts of religious observance; in this case, related to the Passion and death of Jesus Christ and to perform public penance.

  • In front of an appreciative mainly lady audience, a flamenco dancer puts passion into her performance in a caseta (marquee) during the Spring Feria in Seville, Spain. She dramatically stamps her foot and raises her arms in a Juerga an informal, spontaneous gathering where dancing, singing, palmas (hand clapping), or simply pounding in rhythm are enjoyed. Grown out of the fusion of Arabic, Andalusian, Sephardic, and Gypsy cultures traditional flamenco artists simply learned by listening and watching relatives, friends and neighbours. It adapts to the local talent, instrumentation and mood of the audience. Seville holds its annual fair in rows of temporary marquee casetas, hosting families and friends which begin during the April Fair two weeks after the Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week in the Andalusian capital.

  • The Holy Paso depicting the Crucifixion passes through Seville's Plaza Espana during its annual Semana Santa Easter passion processions. Some 60 processions are scheduled for the week, from Palm Sunday through to Easter Sunday morning. The climax of the week is the night of Holy Thursday, when the most popular processions set out to arrive at the Cathedral on the dawn of Good Friday, known as the madrugá. At the centre of each procession are the pasos, an image or set of images set atop a movable float of wood. The structure of the paso is richly carved and decorated with fabric, flowers and candles. Many of the structures carrying the image of Christ are gilded, and those carrying the image of the virgin often silver-plated.

Faced with the closure of its beloved local library, the people of Lambeth, south London hold a demonstration outside the Edwardian-era building. Lambeth council plan to close the facility used by the community as part of austerity cuts, saying they will convert the building into a gym and privately-owned gentrified businesses - rather than a much-loved reading and learning resource. £12,600 was donated by the American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to help build the library which opened in 1906. It is a fine example of Edwardian civic architecture, built with red Flettan bricks and terracotta, listed as Grade II in 1981.
