  • High in the Himalayan foothills, dawn arrives on a bitterly cold morning. A traveller has emerged from his rudimentary room on the left of this lodge in Nepal to stand outside staring at the spectacular landscape of snow-capped peaks in the distance. The wind is whipping snow and ice from the peaks of the Annapurna range and trekkers come from all over the world to sample the inner-peace to be discovered here in one of the most dramatic locations on the planet. Villages such as these partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing and also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak.

  • Beneath the snow-capped peak of Machapuchare (or Machhaphuchhare), otherwise known as the Fishtail, plus other peaks in this Himalayan Himal landscape, we see a group of Nepali locals chatting on low seats outside a home in the town of Pokhara, Nepal. The friends have a roughly-constructed dwelling that uses breeze bocks and concrete and we see a future attempt to make a first story extension. Machapuchare is revered by the local population as particularly sacred to the god Shiva and is therefore off limits to climbing. It’s at the end of a long spur ridge, coming south out of the main backbone of the Annapurna Himal, that forms the eastern boundary of the Annapurna Sanctuary and the peak is about 25km north of Pokhara, the main town of the region.

  • Late orange sunlight plays across upper slopes of Sgorr Dhearg, a mountain in Glencoe, Scotland. With low clouds swirling around the peaks of these Scottish Highland hills, a shaft of sunlight has suddenly illuminated a lower ridge of the 1,024 feet peak and shows it to be surprisingly fertile, rather than barren rock. Grasses and native heathers grow in abundance to make it another popular mountain for walkers and more adventurous climbers. Beyond is a different story where dark tones reveal more sinister weather moving in. The climate in this region of northern Britain is unpredictably changeable and many rescues by RAF helicopter is often required to save those caught high and unprepared

Nestled in a fold of the land, high on the hillside, the peaks rise spectacularly in swirling cloud and light. The small group of houses are merely a farm and a few houses. The Puez Geisler Nature Park is a regional park situated right in the heart of the Dolomite mountain world and is one of the most beautiful and striking in the entire Alpine region.

In the middle of the picture, a young girl twirls and dances across the clearing as her parents and siblings watch, drawfed by the powerfully- dominant range of natural features that form part of the highest altitudes on earth although Gorkha is only 3281 feet (about 1000 meters) above sea level. These peoples' homes cling to the sides of impressive mountains that draw tens of thousands of travellers to this region to trek the paths and conservation sanctuaries of this fast-developing Buddhist and Hindu Kingdom.

  • The imagery of the great outdoors against the urban environment seen through a shop window in central London. In the foreground is a large image of snow-covered mountain peaks in the Alps or another range of geological tops formed over millennia - bare branches below the tree line also making their presence. Above them in an incongruous landscape of nature versus nature are buildings along Bond Street, a fashionable fashion and art area. We see the edifices of a man-made society and architecture and the rawness and beauty of the natural world together in one framed window. Man's achievements within the urban city seen in context with the forces of a natural, uncontrollable environment that we as humans are powerless to harness.

With the heavy load on his back, supported in the traditional Himalayan manner of a head strap that steadies the pack, the man makes his steady way down the foothill using a long pole for extra balance. Communities here partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing but also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers from all over the world walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak. To be greeted by so much choice is the most rewarding experience and the offer of hot showers is about the best reward for so much exertion.

  • Schloss (Castle) Vaduz perches high on the slopes above Vaduz, the capital of the tiny landlocked Principality of Liechtenstein. Prince Hans-Adam II is the current resident of the Schloss. The mountain peaks in the background have snow on their jagged edges but the castle itself is free of snow and rests on the slope on a cold but fresh day. Sunlight shines on the side of the old castle walls making this a fairy tale scene of another era of history. The Liechtenstein dynasty dates a royal lineage going back to 1140 under various lines of the Hapsburgs dynasty. Liechtenstein is bordered by the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland and is a winter sports resort, though best known as a tax haven, attracting companies worldwide to register their assets in secrecy.

  • Looking downwards from a high vantage point on a hillside, we see one mountain-biker leading a second cyclist as they traverse across a sunlit mountainside near the hamlet of Masecha in the parish of Triesenberg, Liechtenstein. The late afternoon sun is low across the valley and there is a haze that partly obscures and refracts light over the distant landscape. There is snow on the distant mountain peaks but the countryside has the brown look of a snowless winter. Far off villages and hamlets hug the hillsides and golden light floods the scene. The tiny landlocked Principality of Liechtenstein is bordered by the Alpine countries of Austria and Switzerland and is a winter sports resort, though best known as a tax haven, attracting companies worldwide to register their assets in secrecy.
