The dance literally means "dance of the enchantress" and had all but disappeared before it was reintroduced at the Kerala Kalamadalam.<br />
The Kalamandalam was founded in 1930 to preserve the cultural traditions of Kathakali, the stylised dance drama of Kerala. Kathakali is the classical dance-drama of Kerala, South India, which dates from the 17th century and is rooted in Hindu mythology. Kathakali is a unique combination of literature, music, painting, acting and dance performed by actors wearing extensive make up and elaborate costume who perform plays which retell in dance form stories from the Hindu epics.

These groups are distinguished by their own customs, beliefs and rituals.

  • Make-up and hair stylists ready a model before the couturier Margaret Howell's Fashion Week show in the company's retail flagship and design studio at 34 Wigmore Street, Central London England. The young beauty has her lips dabbed with tissue to stop her lipstick from smudging. The hairdresser pins her braided hair in a whirl on her head and in the background, other freelance stylists busy themselves in the frantically busy room to get the show on the road. Howell is one of Britain's more understated of couture brands alongside more flamboyant personalities. Howell admits to being "inspired by the methods by which something is made .. enjoying the tactile quality of natural fabrics such as tweeds, linen and cotton in a relaxed, natural and lived in look."

  • Shimenawa and Shime tied to a tree in the grounds of a temple. Nikko, Japan. Sacred places are typically marked with a shimenawa (special plaited rope) and shime (strips of white paper). Placed at the entrances of holy places to ward off evil spirits, or placed around trees/objects to indicate presence of kami. Made of rice straw or hemp, the rope is called nawa 縄. The pieces of white paper that are cut into strips and hung from these ropes (often hung from ropes on Torii gates as well) are called shime 注連 or gohei; they symbolize purity in the Shintō faith.

  • John Taylor, vet, from Holmfirth in West Yorkshire,  and his wife, Sharon, a veterinary nurse, have had Clydesdales for 14 years. When it comes to the preparation and showing, Taylor says, 'I do the washing and she does the plaiting and the ribbons - she is the artistic one. 'Mind you, it's not easy. Billy was clean when we brought him here, but he just lay down in something horrid while I wasn't watching. That's why I'm working late, cleaning him to get him ready for tomorrow. Billy is a family member as far as we're concerned, but I called him all the names under the sun when I saw how dirty he'd got.' The Great Yorkshire Show, one of Britain's biggest agricultural shows, is famous for its competitive displays of livestock. The event, established in 1837, attracts over 125 000 visitors a year and has over 10 000 entries to its pedigree competitions ranging from pigeons and rabbits to bulls and shire horses.
