  • An elderly gentleman prunes his precious crop of fresh red roses from his front garden that sits astride the small River Wandle at Carshalton, south London. trimming off their heads, he s dressed in a straw hat and white apron. He is a very active gardener, the nurturing of plants and flowers being his passion now that he is of retirement age after a lifetime of work. Now he enjoys the rewards of his labours from mother earth in this lush plot of his that looks every bit the perfect English cottage garden despite it being in an urban inner-city.

  • 2012 Olympic wasteland and PR fantasy on a hoarding near the sports arenas in Stratford, East London. A landscape of utopian harmony and nature is viewed on the construction site board that surrounds a vacant plot a kilometre south of the Olympic Park and stadium site. In the background is a new housing tower block by design and build contractor, Ardmore for Genesis Housing Association, 150 High Street, Stratford, 704 homes, in five new residential blocks, one of which, at over 132 metres, will be one of the highest residential towers in London. This landscape is more dystopian however as the reality of the empty lot is not what is promised by the imagery on the hoarding.

  • Taken from a tall apartment block, we see an aerial view overlooking the ex-Portuguese colony of Macau's Chinese Christian cemetery of San Miguel. The Cemiterio de São Miguel Arcanjo (Saint Miguel Catholic Cemetery) is located right in the middle of Macao island, on Estrada do Cemiterio and host the graves of the old Dutch and Portuguese colonials that helped shape Macau, now one of the world's most densely-populated city. We see a single Chinese lady walking along one of many criss-crossing diagonal pathways carrying a red bucket of water to tend these graves. She appears tiny compared to the multitude of plots, some which have crosses and others which have simple headstones. They are mostly neat and tidy but some have become overgrown with grass sprouting up. Macau's gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. The official languages are Portuguese and Chinese. The Macau Special Administrative Region is one of the two special administrative regions of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Hong Kong. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover.

  • In a field at the town of Boofzheim in the eastern French Alsace region, an elderly Frenchman harvests some of his self-grown carrots crop. Having left his old bicycle standing at the kerb of a narrow access road and in front of a field full of maturing maize, he bends down with much effort to dig in his fork or spade into the rich Alsace earth and lift out his vegetables to take home. This landscape is typically French or German (Alsace borders the western side of Germany and saw much tragic action in WW2) where maize is a nutritious foodstuff for cattle and also for ducks and geese who are force-fed it locally in the making of fois gras and pate.

  • Muslim graves and cactus in a local cemetery in the village of Qum (Koom), on the West Bank of Luxor, Nile Valley, Egypt. The grave should be aligned perpendicular to the Qibla (i.e. Mecca). The body is placed in the grave without a casket, lying on its right side, and facing the Qibla. Grave markers should be raised only up to a maximum of 30 centimetres (12 in) above the ground. Thus Grave markers are simple, because outwardly lavish displays are discouraged in Islam. Many times graves may even be unmarked, or marked only with a simple wreath. However, it is becoming more common for family members to erect grave monuments.

  • A scarecrow guards crops and plants by a Gloucestershire country garden dry stone wall. The human figure has been made of straw and fabric, a cloth hat and the form of a blackbird on its head. It stands against the stone wall at the boundary of land in this Cotswold garden, near Cirencester. A scarecrow or hay-man is a decoy or mannequin in the shape of a human. It is usually dressed in old clothes and placed in open fields to discourage birds such as crows or sparrows from disturbing and feeding on recently cast seed and growing crops. As its name suggests, it scares away crows (and other species) from a field.

Blair is with an unknown Downing Street assistant and is has been reading the London Evening Standard newspaper in the First Class carriage at a time when fellow-passengers take little notice of the future controversial world statesman. Then, he could travel in relative obscurity, without large security details. It is dark outside and we see no detail through the window of the vast Victorian mainline station outside.

Allotments have now been around for centuries, a simple plot of land rented and cherished by an individual typically used for growing vegetables or flowers. Some see their plot as their sanctuary, a place of therapy and peace of mind, where one can enjoy the simplicity of nature and wildlife.

  • Fallow fields, slash and burn landscape, Luang Prabang province, Lao PDR. Slash and burn cultivation or ‘hai’ in Lao PDR consists of cutting the natural vegetation, leaving it to dry and then burning it for temporary cropping of the land, the ash acting as a natural fertiliser. To rebuild the soil fertility after growing crops on a shifting cultivation plot, farmers ‘abandon’ that plot and allow vegetation to regrow for a number of years. This is called the ‘fallow period’. In the meantime, they grow crops on other new plots. Shifting cultivation practices, although remarkably sustainable and adapted to their environment in the past, have come under increasing stress in recent decades and are now starting to be a major problem in Lao PDR, causing widespread deforestation and watershed degradation.

  • George Rodgers, 63, a Cornish farmer of at least three generations grows giant vegetables on a quarter acre plot. The seed for his cabbages comes from his father and he provides the seed he says for 85 percent of the cabbages at the main Bath and West Show, which he is preparing for now. Giant vegetable growing is not a hobby for the faint hearted. The growers have to tend to the vegetables almost every day (including Christmas) with a commitment varying from 2-3 hours an evening to the most committed spending up to 80 hours a week, tending, nurturing, growing and spending thousands on fertilisers, electricity and green houses. The reward is to be crowned world record holder of largest, longest or heaviest in class, cabbages weighing in at 100lb, carrots stretching 19 ft and pumpkins tipping the scales at 800lb. it’s a competitive business though and global; some times the record may stand for only hours before a fellow competitor somewhere in the world knocks a grower off the coveted spot.

  • Two contestants of the world worm charming competition bend down to use a fork and a recorder to encourage invertebrates out of the ground in a field at Willaston, Cheshire, England. One woman wears a plastic helmet and the other has a worm illustrated t-shirt with a handmade sign that reads"Ive got the worms!" There are 18 rules translated into 30 languages (including Tibetan) but here these two daft ladies use music and garden tools to vibrate the earth helping the worms to the surface in a 3-metre square plot. International flags are behind but local hero Tom Shufflebotham's 1980 world record still stands at 511 worms out of the ground in half an hour. The fattest worm ever caught weighed 6.6 grams, the most succesful method being hand vibrating a four tyne garden fork inserted approximately 15cms into the turf, known as 'twanging'.

  • A navigational sign for the benefit of airline pilots showing inflight computer longitude and latitude reference points on the apron at Bahrain airport. As airline pilots sit in the cockpit seats they can view this information and input the co-ordinates into the aircraft computers which is then used to plot their departure point and arrival routing, seen here 12 months before the terrorist attacks on America that changed the public's attitude to flying on commercial airliners.

  • Days after the terrorist attacks on America in September 2001, we see front grill and bonnet (hood) paintwork of a parked US Government Ford car in Greenwich Village, scratched by scraped dirt and covered in concrete dust and grit that has been blown from nearby collapsed buildings at Ground Zero. The bent number plate of this now wrecked Federal-owned vehicle shows the impact on property and on the US economy. Total damage after this al-Qaeda plot has been put at $100 billion including: the loss of four civilian aircraft, buildings, the Pentagon, cleanup, property and infrastructure. emergency funds, job losses, unrecoverable property, insurance and air traffic revenue.
