  • Sitting among others in long grass a middle-class lady is hidden by her recently purchased plants at the Chelsea Flower Show, in London England. Surrounded by polythene bags with the stems of various flowering shrubs, she and her companion have just left the show on the last day of the show when members of the Royal Horticultural Society and the general public are invited to buy those plants and shrubs that have been displayed all week. It is the perfect summer May afternoon in west London, when lovers of horticulture have gathered from across the country to admire the ultimate in plants and flowers in the grounds of Chelsea Hospital.

It is mid-winter and during a particularly bleak spell of weather in central London where a stall of fruit and vegetables is selling to locals in the street, suppliers' higher prices being reflected in the winter conditions. The label says Concorde, an almond sweet crisp juicy apple, home grown in 1kg polythene bags, produced from Perry Court Farm near Ashford, Kent.

Leading the way and carrying two walking sticks and in a polythene bag, his best jacket for the dress-code is important if one is allowed access to the private enclosures. He wears a top hat and waste coat as he hobbles along with wife in tow. She is behind him rummaging through her handbag perhaps looking for tickets or cash. Royal Ascot is held every June and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season.

  • Many penalty charge notices (PCNs) accumulated under the windscreen wiper of a badly-parked car in Brixton, Lambeth, south London. Attached to the front of the car we see a detail of the notices from three different occasions, filled out by a Lambeth parking enforcement attendant and accumulating three fines. Drivers and owners are advised not to ignore these notices as there are surcharges levied on the fine if not paid within a period - typically, after 14 days. The PCNs are sealed in polythene bags to avoiud water damageLambeth's fines range from £60 to £130 but in 2012, 43,723 of the 195,705 penalty charge notices that it issued – or 22% - were cancelled after appeals or wrongful issue.
