  • A constant security pressence guard the developing building site, outside Dipton in Pont Valley, 5 May 2018 , County Durham, United Kingdom. Many locals have complained about tactics of intimidation and excessive use of force during the eviction in May. Day of protest in Pont Valley, 5 May 2018 against the extraction of coal by the mining company Banks outside Dipton in Pont Valley, County Durham. Locals have fought the open cast coal mine for thirty years and three times the local council rejected planning permissions but central government has overruled that decision and the company Banks was granted the license and rights to extract coal in early 2018. Locals have teamed up with climate campaigners and together they try to prevent the mining from going ahead. The mining will have huge implications on the local environment and further coal extraction runs agains the Paris climate agreement. A rare species of crested newt is said to live on the land planned for mining and protectors are trying to stop the mine to save the newt.

  • The Ponte degli Alpini over the River Brenta in north Italian town of Bassano. During World War I Bassano was in the front area, and all industrial activities were halted. In World War II, after the Armistice with Italy, the city was invaded by German troops, who killed or deported numerous inhabitants. This symbol of Bassano is the covered wooden pontoon bridge, which was designed by the architect Andrea Palladio in 1569. The bridge was destroyed many times, the last time during WWII. The Alpine soldiers, or Alpini have always revered the wooden bridge and Bassano del Grappa. After the destruction of the bridge, they took up a private collection and had the bridge completely rebuilt. Often soldiers flock to the bridge to remember and sing songs from their days as alpine soldiers.

  • The landscape painter Leo Mancini-Hresko constructs a view on canvass of the Ponte Santa Trinita in Florence. Born in Boston, Leo currently teaches painting and drawing, both privately in his studio in Piazzale Donatello and for The Florence Academy of Art. Ponte Santa Trinita was constructed by the Florentine architect Bartolomeo Ammanati from 1567 to 1569. Its site, downstream of the equally remarkable Ponte Vecchio,[2] is a major link in the medieval street plan of Florence, which has been bridged at this site since the thirteenth century. The bridge was destroyed in 1944 by retreating German troops but reconstructed in 1958 with original stones raised from the Arno or taken from the same quarry, under the direction of the architect Riccardo Gizdulich and the engineer Emilio Brizzi.
