  • A family paddle and play with a fishing net whilst three elderly women swim in Portreath Pool, Cornwall, UK. Created by adding a retaining wall to a rock pool, until the 1970s this tidal pool was used by a local school for swimming lessons. Until the 1950s and the rise of the heated indoor swimming pool, children learnt to swim outdoors. For those close to the sea, many man-made tidal swimming pools were constructed around Britain’s coastline. Heated by the sun, these tidal pools were often built to keep bathers safe from high and rough seas, which explains why so many of them are clustered in Scotland and around the surfing beaches of Cornwall. Whether they are simple swimming holes made by shoring up natural rock pools or grand lido-like pools complete with lifeguards and tea huts, they are all refreshed by good high tides.

  • Neak Pean, which means "entwined serpents" i a collection of pools, linked together by walkways. The main pool which sits at the centre has a tower in turn sitting at it's centre. Filled with water during the rainy season, the main pool would originally have supplied the smaller pools set in each cardinal direction. The symbolism of this pool is disputed, although popular belief says that it emulates Anavatapa, a Himalayan lake with miraculour curative powers. The pool may have at one time, been a spa where pilgrims came to use the waters.

  • A lone bather wallows lazily in the calm pool waters at the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat (formerly the Bel Air Hotel), Alpes Maritimes, France. Basking on his back, the man lies with arms outstretched, the warm buoyant water making him weightless. he has found inner-peace and there is restful tranquility here, where surface-tension allows the bather to unwind completely in this idyllic place on the French Cote d'Azur riviera. Behind his head unoccupied sun loungers are facing the Mediterranean Sea, its clear horizon empty except for a lone yacht that sails along the ocean coast. The colour of both sea and pool are the same on this overcast day that allows us to experience a more muted tone to the scene, also allowing us to see the contiunation of natural waters, as if they run from one to the other.

The Lido is a magnet, an oasis, for city dwellers to escape, if only for an hour from the pressures of fast urban life. Many enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends. In the centre, a mother helps her young daughter up from the cool morning water before another hot day in August. Brockwell Lido is a large, open-air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994.

  • Regular swimmers and bathers enjoy quieter lengths at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido before crowds arrive. After a 6.30am summer opening time, these Londoners escape the crowds and unwind during a warm spell of weather and before another day of city heat. • Lying on her back with eyes closed, a young girl stretches her arms out allowing her father to support her weight in an empty swimming pool in Miami Florida. With complete trust, she lets herself go and yields to her own natural buoyancy as she floats amid this seemingly wide ocean of chlorinated water belonging to a hotel on Ocean Drive. We see her bright red costume clearly against the complimentary prime colour green in a vibrant display from the spectrum. It is a scene of love and confidence, of youth and health.

  • Butlins beach ball floating in the swimming pool in Butlins holiday camp, Skegness. The slogan Our true intent is all for your delight was borrowed from Midsummers Nights Dream. Butlins Skegness is a holiday camp located in Ingoldmells near Skegness in Lincolnshire. Sir William Butlin conceived of its creation based on his experiences at a Canadian summer camp in his youth and by observation of the actions of other holiday accommodation providers, both in seaside resort lodging houses and in earlier smaller holiday campsThe camp began opened in 1936, when it quickly proved to be a success with a need for expansion. The camp included dining and recreation facilities, such as dance halls and sports fields. Over the past 75 years the camp has seen continuous use and development, in the mid-1980s and again in the late 1990s being subject to substantial investment and redevelopment. In the late 1990s the site was re-branded as a holiday resort, and remains open today as one of three remaining Butlins resorts.

  • Two obese parents and their normal weight child sit with their backs to the viewer on the edge of a pool on the open deck of the Fun Ship Ecstasy belonging to Carnival Cruises, as it sails through the Gulf of Mexico. The two adults and the girl wear bathing costumes and their tanned skin is exposed to the sun. They are sitting on the rectangular pool-side tiles taking in the atmosphere and the blue water that they're facing. We see the comparison of healthy youth and oversized adulthood, the parents' wide posteriors dwarf the normal size of their child.
