Musicians, actors, film-makers and MPs are joining protesters for the Anti-war Mass Assembly in Trafalgar Square. The Stop The War Coalition said up to 5,000 people were at the protest but a BBC correspondent estimated there were about 1,000 people in the square. The coalition says opinion polls show most British people want a "speedy withdrawal" of UK forces. The demo brought together people from many groups in solidarity.

He holds a placard with the now famous Peace Symbol, originally designed in 1958 for the British nuclear disarmament movement, designed by British artist Gerald Holtom for the march planned by the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War (DAC) from Trafalgar Square, London to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston. The symbol was later adopted by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), and subsequently became an international emblem for the 1960s anti-war movement and the counterculture of the time.

  • A young protester wears polar bear facepaint in front of Aurora, the double-decker-bus-size polar bear puppet specially commissioned by Greenpeace to lead an Arctic-inspired street parade to the London HQ of oil giant Shell on 15 September. The three-tonne marionette bear is operated from the inside by a team of 15 puppeteers,  and  hauled on ropes by 30 volunteers along a route from Victoria Gardens to Shell's HQ at Waterloo. The giant bear, which is made of replica and reclaimed ship parts as well as recycled materials, carries in her fur the names of over 3 and half million people who have joined the global movement to protect the Arctic from industrial exploitation. This parade  was part of a global day of action to protect the Arctic withtens of thousands of people taking to the streets in over 70 cities worldwide.
