  • A French Dassault-Breguet Mirage military jet interceptor/fighter stands on a pedestal in the Place de la Concorde, Paris during an aviation display weekend along the Champs Elysées. Passers-by seem oblivious to this celebration of French aviation as they walk through the Parisian square, the scene of public executions during the revolution. The Mirage seems to be climbing off its platform and up into the cloudless summer afternoon sky as a young child sits on top of his father's shoulders and passengers in a city bus seem trapped behind the windows. Its is a scene of incongruous moments, a surreal appearance of frightening military technology amid the calm of a public place. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • The Wassail sign at the Old Star public house in Kilham village, Yorkshire Wolds, UK on 21st January 2017. Wassail is a traditional Pagan winter celebration in cider-producing regions of England, reciting incantations and singing to the trees to promote a good harvest for the coming year. Pieces of toast soaked in cider are hung in the branches to attract robins to the tree as these are said to be the good spirits of the orchard. To ward off evil spirits, villagers scare them away by banging pots and pans and making as much noise as possible

  • Hooded peninitents (Nazarenos) during Seville's annual Easter Holy Week (Semana Santa de Sevilla) one of the most important traditional events of the city. The annual celebrations mark the story of Christ's crucifixion and the Nazarenos walk through the historic Andalucian city in front of the devout in a series of processions. Several hundred members of the 57 religious brotherhoods (or Hermandades) from many of city churches accompany giant floats (Pasos) depicting the road to Calvary. The brotherhoods (founded in the mid 14th century) are associations of Catholic laypersons organised for the purpose of performing public acts of religious observance; in this case, related to the Passion and death of Jesus Christ and to perform public penance.
