  • A man dressed in a dark suit and tie, shoes and socks lies down on his matching jacket for a short rest - perhaps during a lunchtime break from an office job - and stretches out on the incline of Blackpool seafront. In the background is Blackpool Tower, an architectural copy of Paris' Eiffel Tower opened to the public on 14 May 1894 and rises to 158m (518 ft 9 inches). As a sort of English eccentric character, the man looks incongruous as he sleeps in sunshine amid other holidaymakers. This northern seaside resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd. Blackpool is the largest resort in the north of England and visited traditionally by working people from industrial towns and cities during the industrial revolution.

  • A young couple sit on an early, quiet Blackpool North Pier in Lancashire. With no one else to bother them during a private conversation. It looks a little one-sided, as the man sits nonchalantly with legs splayed, as if disinterested in the romantic whispers from his girlfriend, and the woman, looking much more attentive and in love. We see the calm waters of the Irish Sea that this morning is at high tide. • Two men enjoy their own versions of Blackpool North Pier, Lancashire, England. On the right, the first man is lying down on a bench with his trousers gathered around his ankles, his red bathing costume or underpants are baggy and he is looking across to something of interest while scratching his bald head. The second man on the right is not wearing a shirt and his stomach is spilling over his trousers. He has a bunch of keys attached to his belt and is pointing a video camera (camcorder) towards the shore. It is a comical scene and typical of Blackpool beach life. This northern sea side resort in the north-west of England is diverse in its transient holiday population whose behaviour can be routinely odd.

  • Despite a gloriously bright summer afternoon, we see a depressing corner of Southend-on-Sea's Adventure Island. A young couple sits on some white towels in front of a wall that is adorned with graffiti and has its paint rubbed away. It is a scene of squalor and desolation in a town that makes revenue from the day-tripper holiday market. Since Victorian times, many Londoners have traditionally come to this south-east coast on the Thames Estuary, close to the capital. Towns like this have seen a marked decline since the advent of the package tourism in favour of exotic beaches in Spain.

  • A makeshift warning sign made from plywood is roughly painted with letters declaring 'oil on beach.' It hangs on some silver railings on an unknown beach in England. The sand is strewn with sharp stones and litter and coloured (colored) a dirty brown stain high up on the shore line and more worrying, a little more distant, a father cuddles his baby child on a towel surrounded by possessions such as a cool box and the seaside toys of a happy family holiday (vacation). We look down on to this scene in disbelief that a parent lies down on such polluted terrain when health and safety considerations might have closed the entire esplanade.

  • A pet poodle looks towards us in the same way that an RSPCA charity box model spaniel does outside a seaside shop tourist. The shop is selling seaside resort holiday tourist trinkets – a postcard rack has been carefully placed in the middle of the pavement (sidewalk) as holidaymakers pass-by to browse the cheap mementoes. The owner of the poodle has stopped to choose some cards for those at home and allows his dog a little slack on the lead. The dog cranes its neck towards the viewer, matching the posture and stance of the model charity spaniel whose cast sits, posing in a sorrowful and empathy-making show of need, suffering and want – enough perhaps to encourage people to give to this charity, the RSPCA (the Royal Society for the Protection of Animals).

  • With the Coronavirus lockdown continuing into the Bank Holiday weekend, when Prime Minister Boris Johnson is due to tell the nation that only a gradual easing of regulations and social distancing rules are still to be in place, a single person walks through security barriers with temporary signs for social distancing outside a closed McDonalds in a near-deserted Liverpool Street Station in the City of London, the capitals financial district, on 7th May 2020, in London, England.

  • A lone Tornado jet fighter arcs across a typically overcast sky at Southend-on-Sea on a Bank Holiday Sunday. Well-defined figures of children and adults either play nonchalantly on the beach at low tide, or watch in awe as the aircraft thunders over the Thames Estuary mud. A few stranded yachts stand upright in the low water and a groyne stretches out to sea towards the Kent coast, seen in the distance. It is a bleak and depressingly empty scene and the jet is merely a dot in the grey English sky, traditionally familiar summer weather. • Household refuse pollutes a coral beach on Meedu Island, an indigenous community in the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Packaging, foodstuffs and general waste has been tossed away on this otherwise beautiful place, north of the capital Male. Unfortunately, the practice of tossing away one's rubbish is a normal practice in this culture, the local people selfishly unconcerned about the future of their habitat and the health of their community. Only a few miles from Meedu are islands that serve as holiday resorts where families from Europe travel by air for the perffect vacation - unaware that fly-tipping is so widespread that it threatens this nation's worldwide status as a paradise on earth.

  • Still holding tight on to a pamphlet for the David Hockney art show, a foreign tourist has fallen asleep on a public bench in Green Park. The day of touring Britain's capital has proved too much for this visitor who has instinctively fallen unconscious on the curved lines of the bench a few metres from Piccadilly. In the distance we see the tall London Plane trees that line the path towards Buckingham Palace.

  • Passengers waiting for a delayed train, Waterloo station, London. Despite being nationalised in 1947 "as one of the ‘commanding heights’ of the economy", British Rail was not profitable for many years. Declining passenger numbers and financial losses in the late 1950s and early 1960s prompted the closure of many branch and main lines, and small stations, under the Beeching Axe. Coming and Going is a project commissioned by the Museum of London for photographer Barry Lewis in 1976 to document the transport system as it is used by passengers and commuters using public transport by trains, tubes and buses in London, UK.

  • Five childrens' buggies line up in front of 5 park rental carriages in Seville's Parque de Marie Luisa. We don't see the children or their parents, nor any tourists in the background but this is a favourite meeting place for visitors and Spanish families in this green park space. Major parts of the grounds of María Luisa park were donated in 1893 to the city of Seville by the Dutchess of Montpensier to be used as a public park. Beginning in 1911, the French gardener Jean-Claude Forestier remodelled the already existing gardens into their actual shapes

  • Posing in the open doorway of an Airbus A319CJ Business jet, four female cabin crew members wear the uniforms of Qatar Airways whose airline has made a public relations stop at the Farnborough Air Show to publicise this new model of executive service. Airline stewards and stewardesses are nowadays more commonly referred to as cabin crew or flight attendants. They stand close together with broad grins showing their varied ethnicity. Middle-Eastern airlines generally recruit men and women from western Europe, Asia, Australasia and the Indian sub-continent dependent on routes and aircraft type.
