  • A beautifully simple white cotton shirt by couturier Margaret Howell is displayed in the company's workshop factory in Edmonton, North London. England. Ironed without creases, the garment has been set on a dress making tailor's dummy made by Kennett and Lindsell of Romford Essex. The pure white shirt is seen against a similarly-toned white wall and lit by daylight. Howell is one of Britain's more understated of couture brands alongside more flamboyant personalities. Howell admits to being "inspired by the methods by which something is made .. enjoying the tactile quality of natural fabrics such as tweeds, linen and cotton in a relaxed, natural and lived in look."

  • A wild bather swims the breast stroke in mountain waters of River Shiel in Moidart on the Ardnamurchan peninsular, Western Scotland. Viewed from a high viewpoint, an aerial perspective from a nearby bridge, we see the man having entered the water from rocks, and out into the current which will take him under the bridge and into a wider channel. Ripples expand outwards from the man. The water is pure and clean, having come from mountain streams and springs, if a little cold. But the swimmer is wearing a wetsuit to protect him from the chill. It is a near-perfect place that is largely secret from outsiders.

  • Using recycled bottles, locals collect thermal spring water at Fonte de Sao Joao, on 17th July 2016, in the spa resort of Luso, Portugal. In the 11th century, Luso was a sleepy village linked to a monastery in the hills near Coimbra but it became a lively spa resort in the 1700s as its hot water springs became a focus for tourism. The waters here are said to have therapeutic value in the treatment for bad circulation, muscle tone, rheumatism and renal problems.

  • Gothic memorial of angels in cemetery of Church of the Holy Rude in Stirling. The Biblical words Saviour, Judge and King are written in stained glass along the top of the architectural piece. Holy Rude is one of the town's most historically important buildings. It was rebuilt in the 1400s after Stirling suffered a catastrophic fire in 1405, and is the only surviving church in the United Kingdom apart from Westminster Abbey, to have held a coronation. On 29 July 1567 the infant son of Mary, Queen of Scots, was crowned James VI of Scotland here. Musket shot marks from Cromwell's troops during the War of the Three Kingdoms are clearly visible on the tower and apse. Another important historical religious site in the area is Cambuskenneth Abbey.

  • The Star Pyramid in Stirling's Holy Rude Churchyard. Dedicated to religious martyrs and freedom, the pyramid was commissioned by William Drummond in 1863. Inscribed with the words Rock of Ages, Psalms 62 which in the Christian Bible, talks about 'God, our Rock of Ages .. that the rock which is higher than we are, that rock who is a refuge.' etc. As the peak of the pyramid rises to a point we also see the carving in stone of an open Bible that as if printed, has the words 'Word of God' and on the next page, "Light and Truth.' On 29 July 1567 the infant son of Mary, Queen of Scots, was crowned James VI of Scotland near here.

  • Piled river bed stones on the River Calder in Glen Bauchor, Newtonmore, Scotland. An artist has spent many hours in this tranquil place, sourcing and selecting the right stones to pile up vertically on top of each other. Rock balancing can be a performance art, a spectacle, or devotion, depending upon the interpretation by its audience. Essentially, it involves placing some combination of rock or stone in arrangements that require patience and sensitivity to generate, and which appear to be physically impossible while actually being only highly improbable.

  • Next to a beach bather, water pours from an outlet pipe on a tourist beach on Coloane island Cheoc Van beach, Macau, China. With his face towards the course sand, the bather lies with his head towards a large wall, whose large stone blocks accommodate the pipe at the bottom. Apart from a pair of brief swimming trunks and a sun hat, he lies with ankles crossed, as if in paradise. But this seemingly industrial landscape is far from the idyllic place other tourists might wish to frequent. We do not know how filthy or indeed how pure, this water that pours out from the ground is, but the suspicion is that the pollution may affect human health. The once-Portuguese colony of Macau is now administered by China as a Special Economic Region (SER) and the official languages are Portuguese and Chinese.

  • A young man sits on a sandbank beneath a sun brolley. With legs and feet protruding the man is in the middle of a sand maze constructed for the London Thames Festival, the annual celebration of all things related to London life and culture. The maze has been trodden by pairs of feet to create concentric circles that ultimately lead to the centre. Seen only at low-tide on the river's foreshore near Gabriel's Wharf, the stretch of fine, natural sandy beach is used by Londoners to sample a touch of seaside on fine summer days and was popular with Victorians before the arrivals of railways taking them to the coast. Nowadays the Thames is much cleaner after more stringent environment policies and the sand in some places is pure.

  • A Chinese wedding couple have their formal portrait taken in a tunnel opposite the Palace of Westminster, London. Popular destination for Asian travellers and especially for newly-weds who want the backdrop of European cities for their wedding album, it is common to see touring couples having their pictures taken in front of the famous sights around the UK capital. The romantic image is however purely based on the background and not on the surrounding landscape which can often be more dystopian than that desired.

  • Travellers' horses rest during the ancient annual Priddy Sheep (and horse) fair in Somerset, England. Set in the Mendip Hills, in the south-western English county of Somerset, the Priddy Sheep fair is host to an odd mix of farmers and travellers (commonly and incorrectly known as gypsies). In this field set aside purely for travellers, many with West Country accents but also with nearby Welsh and Irish too, deals are done with a traditional spit on the hand and a smacking of palms, selling a pony to another family. The Priddy Sheep Fair moved from the city of Wells in 1348 because of the Black Death.

  • Grooming a pet dog before another round of Crufts Show in Earls Court, London. With strong backlighting sunshine, the animal's owner brushes its coat to make it presentable before the judges in a short while. Nearby, other owners sit with their own dogs in stalls provided by the Kennel Club organisers. Crufts is one of the largest dog events in the world. No longer purely a dog show, Crufts celebrates every aspect of the role that dogs play in our lives.

  • Looking down from above, we see one lone queuing traveller at Charles de Gaulle, gazes up towards the large Departures board. Fellow-passengers wait by baggage trolleys in a civilised line beneath the information. Charles de Gaulle/Roissy is a hub airport for Air France north of the French capital. The departures information has schedule times, destinations, flight, satellite and gate numbers plus remarks. Air travellers experience such misery every day and shows of how global air travel has become a routine, mundane and stressful for the everyday airline passenger - a far cry from when commercial flight was purely for the elite. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.
