  • A young national Health general practitioner doctor (GP) uses an otoscope to inspect an even young little girl - a Tamil refugee from Sri Lanka whose father has brought his family to Britain in 1986 to escape racial and political persecution during his country's war between the Sinhalese majority and this ethnic minority group. The surgery is in the north London borough of Camden and the child of approximately 8 years of age is held by her father's firm hand that grips her chin to avoid movement. The health professional peers into the instrument to check for infections so the little girl can carry on dealing with this unfamiliar adopted country and strange ways of life in the UK.

  • Many racial groups enjoy the pleasures of outdoor in the unheated pool of the Grade II listed Brockwell (Brixton) Lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill. The Lido is a magnet, an oasis, for city dwellers to escape, if only for an hour from the pressures of fast urban life. Many enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends. Wearing a straw hat, necklace and hanging sunglasses, a young afro-Caribbean man sunbathes near a blonde white girl who looks over her shoulder. Brockwell Lido is a large, open air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Brockwell Lido was designed by HA Rowbotham and TL Smithson of the London County Council's Parks Department to replace Brockwell Park bathing pond.

  • Friday night action, Butlins holiday camp, Skegness. Butlins Skegness is a holiday camp located in Ingoldmells near Skegness in Lincolnshire. Sir William Butlin conceived of its creation based on his experiences at a Canadian summer camp in his youth and by observation of the actions of other holiday accommodation providers, both in seaside resort lodging houses and in earlier smaller holiday campsThe camp began opened in 1936, when it quickly proved to be a success with a need for expansion. The camp included dining and recreation facilities, such as dance halls and sports fields. Over the past 75 years the camp has seen continuous use and development, in the mid-1980s and again in the late 1990s being subject to substantial investment and redevelopment. In the late 1990s the site was re-branded as a holiday resort, and remains open today as one of three remaining Butlins resorts.

  • Amid much humour and banter, two meat porters grab hands in Smithfield market during the pre-dawn buying and selling of meat, bought and sold here for 800 years, one of London’s oldest markets. One man’s coat reveals blood stains as he smiles good-naturedly to his fellow worker who is of afro-Caribbean descent. A livestock market occupied the site as early as the 10th century. Approximately 120,000 tons of produce pass through the market each year. As well as meat and poultry, products such as cheese, pies, and other delicatessen goods are available. Buyers including butchers, restaurateurs and caterers are able see the goods for themselves and drive away with what they have bought. Bargaining between buyers and sellers at Smithfield sets the guidelines for meat and poultry prices throughout the UK.

It is the only independent university in the UK with a Royal Charter, and probably the smallest with just around 1000 students. Honours degrees are achieved in two intensive years of study. The University campus is well known for being one of the most attractive locations in the region. The Great Ouse river, home to much wildlife, winds through the heart of our campus. Much of our teaching takes place in our restored buildings. Each student mixes with 89 other different nationalities and so being at Buckingham is just like being in a mini global village.

  • A couple of mixed-race have put their heads through the apertures made in a painting that depicts Prince Albert and Queen Victoria, on the Palace Pier at Brighton, on the south coast of England. The faces peep through this traditional attraction that few can resist, even in the 21st century. The man’s face looks disturbingly incongruous in the place where the Prince Consort’s white German character would be. There is a message here of a changing multi-cultural British society where these friends or partners are from other ethnic backgrounds and where mixed-marriages are now commonplace, as opposed to the Victorian era when attitudes to racism and race-relations were vastly different.
