  • Woman pedestrian walks past bent railings in a London street. In a perfectly-timed picture, the lady strides past the damaged railings, twisted by a vehicle, perhaps - or by someone with strong tools. Her legs are perfectly aligned with the angle of bent steel uprights - now reshaped into diagonals. The street is underoing massive change due to the capital's Crossrail project where pedestrian disruption actually encourages people to walk a shorter route in the road, rather than the safer pavement.

  • As the wake from a ship foams behind the vessel, a young girl stands on some railings of a cross-Channel ferry that is sailing between Dover in England and Calais in France. Holidaymakers take their vehicles to continental Europe and foot passengers go on foot. The child stands and grips the rails as the sea is left disturbed by the boat’s propellers. It’s not a safe place for a young person to stand, so near the edge of the ship and the water below. She looks at the sea and imagines her holiday adventure that is beginning. People do fall overboard on these voyages and children need to be supervised so close to danger.

  • Four friends gather every morning in the summer at Brockwell (Brixton) Lido. This is a favourite place in the capital for varied groups of people to meet, swim or just hang out like these London taxi drivers who regularly meet for exercise sessions, accumulating sun tans during long periods in the sunshine. Bare except for their costumes, they stretch and yawn, read a newspaper and lean against a railing all the while swapping anecdotes and complaining grumpily about the state of the world near a brick wall that retains heat. Brockwell Lido in Herne Hill SE24 was originally built in 1937 at a time of coastal and city pool-building but went into decline when bathers preferred to holiday in warmer Spain. Its revival happened when local entrepreneurs re-opened the business and it now enjoys a reputation for some of the best urban swims in the UK.

  • The golden gates of the Palace of Versaille, near Paris. Replicas of the original 80m wrought iron and gold leaf gates grace the entrance to Louix XVI's former power base. A total of 100,000 gold leaves were crafted into the shapes of fleur de lys, crowns, masks of Apollo, cornucopias and the crossed capital Ls representing the Sun King. Private donors contributed £4 million to rebuild the 15-ton work, and a plethora of historians and top craftsmen – sculptors, gilders, wrought iron craftsmen and ornament makers – were drafted in to ensure an exact replica of the original built by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in the 1680s.
