  • A 1992 portrait of a British Rail employee stands at the gate of a platform at Victoria station. Wearing the old uniform of that rail company. British Railways (BR), which from 1965 traded as British Rail, was the operator of most of the rail transport in Great Britain between 1948 and 1997. It was formed from the nationalisation of the "Big Four" British railway companies and lasted until the gradual privatisation of British Rail, in stages between 1994 and 1997. The British Rail "double arrow" logo is formed of two interlocked arrows showing the direction of travel on a double track railway and was nicknamed "the arrow of indecision". It is now employed as a generic symbol on street signs in Great Britain denoting railway stations.

  • As blue light fades on a bitterly cold winter's evening, the barrier of an Austrian level-crossing has been lowered to stop traffic and allow a high-speed ICE-T train to continue on its route through, near Salzburg, Austria, Europe. OBB, the Austrian Federal Railways operate a network of 5,683 km makes them the by far largest railway-company in this country. Heavy snow has fallen in this region of the Alps and deposits have settled on the fences and the glowing red stop traffic light, signalling for motorists to halt at this dangerous road-crossing location. So fast is this mode of transport, it blurs past this cold, desolate spot where only one nearby house is next to the trackside. (From a story about travelling through 6 European countries by coach in 7 days).

  • Seen from a low angle at the side of the track, near where grass and daisies grow, a speeding Eurostar TGV train hurtles towards the viewer, blurring as it comes towards us. This is the Kent countryside, otherwise known as the fertile Garden of England, and the route for high-speed trains that ply back and forth between western Europe and London St Pancras. This international passenger service was made possible by the completion of the Channel Tunnel in 1994 operating eighteen-carriage Class 373 trains which run at up to 300 kilometres per hour (186 mph) on a network of high-speed lines. Eurostar is operated by the national railway companies of France and Belguim, SNCF and SNCB, and by Eurostar (UK) Ltd (EUKL), a subsidiary of London and Continental Railways (LCR) which in turn also owns the high-speed infrastructure and stations on the British side.

  • On both sides of the railway track, thousands of commuters desperate to get home after a long day at work in central London, line the platforms to we see from an aerial perspective. But the rail workers’ union has called for industrial action and there are no trains yet for these passengers to board for north or southbound services. Sensibly away from the edges, people are standing up to six-deep in anticipation of a ride home as the exodus to the suburbs hits its peak time. 37 per cent of workers in the capital used rail or underground travel as their main form of transport to work, according to regional and local statistics compiled by the Office for National Statistics.

  • The new Channel Tunnel rail terminal under construction in the Kent countryside at Folkestone in 1989. A workman walks over part of the structure that will in the future, take the Eurostar and Shuttle trains through this portal underneath the town of Folkestone and on beneath the English Channel to the French coast. The technique is known as cut and cover. Eleven tunnel boring machines cut through chalk marl to construct two rail tunnels and a service tunnel. Tunnelling commenced in 1988, and the tunnel began operating in 1994. In 1985 prices, the total construction cost was £4.650 billion (equivalent to £11 billion today), an 80% cost overrun. At the peak of construction 15,000 people were employed with daily expenditure over £3 million. Ten workers were killed during construction between 1987 and 1993, most in the first few months of boring.

Wearing their best clobber and obligatory headwear for the posh event, the seated females are dressed in summer skirts and tops, in readiness for a warm day at the races. Sharing a joke and with plastic glasses filled with champagne from a bottle that one has been serving from, the 7 women are in good spirits in their private first class compartment that has a number 1 on the outside door. Royal Ascot is held every June and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season.

  • During the evening rush hour, hundreds of rail commuters are queueing to board a Thameslink train which has just arrived on the platform at Farringdon Station in Clerkenwell, London England. Standing 10-deep, they patiently wait the next ride home southbound during a tube strike forced the closure of underground stations and making workers take alternative routes. Looking down from a high bridge we see the train's roof and the heads of those delayed and inconvenienced. It is another miserable journey home.

  • A schoolboy of Afro-Caribbean descent stands looking confused on a platform at Victoria mainline station in central London. The young lad looks smart in a new school uniform of cap, blazer, long trousers and polished black shoes. We might guess that it is the start of a new academic year and that he is about to attend a new school for which he needs to take a train on his own. His mother and younger and older sister are also to the far right of the picture so he may go with his elder sibling carrying a multi-coloured umbrella and a bright blue briefcase containing his lunch and a few items needed for lessons. Surrounded by adult commuters, some of who look on with mild amusement, also make await their train from the city out of town. Mostly, people mind their own business and what is a special day for the boy will become a much-travelled route.
