  • With his personal belongings and beach shingle surrounding him, a man sits on his seaside towel in soft sunlight in Dover eating a snack which is dribbling out of his mouth. The skin from many previous hours of exposure to solar radiation has left him raw and sunburned and therefore dried and dying skin is peeling in shreds on his back and shoulder. He looks like an eccentric local character who seems oblivious to the health risks that his continued sunbathing is inflicting on his bizarrely scorched body.

  • The outline of electricity cables stretch across a gloomy winter sky in woodland near Wrington, North Somerset England. Diagonally, the cables travel across the picture but they are part of a line of L6 pylons that have already crossed many miles of South-West England's countryside, carrying 40,000 Volts along this network of aluminium cables to power some of Bristol's high supply demands. In the foreground we see the bare boughs and branches of trees creating a Sci-Fi scene of ugly 21st technology versus the beauty of nature. Insatiable appetites for raw power and energy means electricity is now an expensive comodity after climbing oil prices doubled electricity utility bills for some domestic users.

  • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.

  • A Christmas tree glows in a warm window of a rural house seen from outside in bleak temperatures during mid-winter snows in England. In deep blue light we experience from the feel of this picture, the rawness of deep winter, the icy conditions where an unseen country-living family are safe indoors. The property is a cottage on a quiet road in the Mendip hills, southeast of the city of Bristol in western England. It is during the Christmas holiday period and families, who are lucky to have reached their homes during very difficult weather, are now enjoying the solitude and tranquillity of a peaceful life - away from the metropolis. Their brick wall is topped with snow and the light from the burglar alarm shows the security system is active. We also see the bleak landscape of bare trees and the remote icy road.

  • The imagery of the great outdoors against the urban environment seen through a shop window in central London. In the foreground is a large image of snow-covered mountain peaks in the Alps or another range of geological tops formed over millennia - bare branches below the tree line also making their presence. Above them in an incongruous landscape of nature versus nature are buildings along Bond Street, a fashionable fashion and art area. We see the edifices of a man-made society and architecture and the rawness and beauty of the natural world together in one framed window. Man's achievements within the urban city seen in context with the forces of a natural, uncontrollable environment that we as humans are powerless to harness.

  • An elderly lady makes her way from her community village Memorial Hall which she has been volunteering this winter morning as part of a charity funds raising event. The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

  • A man of Afro-Caribbean birth, clutches at his scarf to keep out freezing temperatures during a cold snap in south London. Falling snow has settled on the man's black hair and even turned his eyelashes white after his walk from home to a local bus stop from where he is trying to commute to work. Because of skin colour, the white snowflakes make this picture a largely monochrome scene, adding to the bleak sense of wintry conditions. He is clearly unprepared for winter, wearing neither hat nor gloves and looks chilled to the bone thanks to the heat he's losing through his head and upper body. The climate of this part of the northern hemisphere can be ferocious for those ill-equipped or at the very least, unpleasant for those from warmer parts of the world.

Each cool evening the tapper removes a thin layer of bark along a downward half spiral on the tree trunk. She makes an incision in the bark of the tree and fluid then drains into a collecting vessel. If done carefully and with skill, this tapping panel will yield latex for up to 5 years. Malaysia is one of the top exporters of natural rubber. Ski or sledge tracks can be seen at her feet but she is the only person in this empty landscape, as if she's walking on her own through the snowy hills. It is the winter of 1967 and the reds are very vibrant and dominant from the Kodachrome film used which also has a wonderful muted blue colour cast in the mid-tones giving the picture a chilly, wintry feel reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded and dated look.
