  • A detail of the ornate sign hanging outside the Sailor's Reading Room on East Cliff, Southwold, Suffolk. Topless mermaids and a shell form part of the sign on a red brick wall of this Grade II listed Sailors' Reading Room, which still provides daily papers and a place to read them. Built in 1864 in memory of Captain Charles Rayley RN, a naval officer at the time of Trafalgar, the Reading Room was a refuge for fishermen and sailors. It provided a place to meet and receive religious instruction, away from the pubs, and somewhere to read things that were good for the soul. Displays of a seafaring nature line the walls and fill glass cabinets. Pictures and portraits of local fishermen and seascapes, model ships and maritime paraphernalia offer a fascinating history of Southwold’s connections with the sea.

Listening to an mp3 device, a man reads the Sports section of his newspaper on the top deck of a London bus. Seated by the window of this double-decker, the man has wires from his music device protruding from his ears, listening perhaps to his favourite band or live radio as his commuting journey stops and starts in inner-city traffic. The word Sport can be seen at the top of this newspaper section and we have the idea that football is the subject that he is reading about. Another passenger sits in the row in front and she too appears to be reading, or sleeping. Affordable flats are in the distance outside.

Ornate square tile mosaics are set in the pavement (sidewalk) in a design style that Lisbon is well-known for. The tunnel is a turning off Sclater Street that formed part of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's subterranean Bishopgate Goodsyard in use between 1840 to 1964. • An exhausted father lays on the family sofa, snuggled up with his infant child who also slumbers on his chest. He has been reading a yellow-covered copy of the Don de Lillo novel, Libra. In the background, the wife and mother can be seen having some sort of personal crisis while the man looks very chilled out and probably pleased to have the chance to read, snooze and have his sleeping child to comfort. It is a scene of role-reversal as the male of the family is the one left holding the baby, a scene of a modern family as opposed to the traditional Victorian or Edwardian gender.

Faced with the closure of its beloved local library, Lambeth council plan to close the facility used by the community as part of austerity cuts, saying they will convert the building into a gym and privately-owned gentrified businesses - rather than a much-loved reading and learning resource. £12,600 was donated by the American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie to help build the library which opened in 1906. It is a fine example of Edwardian civic architecture, built with red Flettan bricks and terracotta, listed as Grade II in 1981.

The prison is run by Her Majesty's Prison Service. Askham Grange accepts adult females and female young offenders, and has space for ten mothers to maintain full-time care of their child or children whilst in custody. Inmates tend to have already served three years or more in other prisons, and are transferred to Askham Grange to complete the last part (maximum three years) of their sentence. Because of this the prisons main focus is the re-integration and re-settlement of prisoners into the community and preparation for life after prison.
