  • A closed and abandoned primary school playground in Oban, Scotland. At near ground level, we see across the broken surface of a play area where young children once played outside between lesson in this western Scottish town. Three palm trees have been painted on a wall beyond the overgrown plants grow between the cracks on concrete and roughly-made tarmac. It is a dystopian scene, one of hope and optimism and tropical optimism and decline and squalid reality.

  • As two passers-by walk into the city scene, two more Londoners stand beneath the panels of a large poster for the H&M clothing brand on Regent Street, London. The faces of female and one male model look out towards the street in the shopping area north of Oxford Circus where many branded shops line Regent Street. Modelling affordable street fashion we see young, beautiful people represented on the billboard, their clothes all perfect and stylish while the realities of ordinary folk are below.

  • Following UK commercial driving law, a lorry driver relaxes by reading in a window at the M40 motorway services in Warwickshire, England. Leaning back while engrossed in his book, the man is sitting in sunlight on this summer's day. Outside is a poster advertising the premium ice cream brand, Magnum. A girl is shown also lounging about enjoying a Magnum on a beautiful sun-kissed beach, with the sun reflecting on a calm sea. We see Magnum's web site and their products of Classic and White chocolate snacks in their wrappers. The man is oblivious to the nature of the ad but it lends a sense of paradise versus reality, between the fantasy of youth, natural beauty and the reality of an older working man on the road.

  • 2012 Olympic wasteland and PR fantasy on a hoarding near the sports arenas in Stratford, East London. A landscape of utopian harmony and nature is viewed on the construction site board that surrounds a vacant plot a kilometre south of the Olympic Park and stadium site. In the background is a new housing tower block by design and build contractor, Ardmore for Genesis Housing Association, 150 High Street, Stratford, 704 homes, in five new residential blocks, one of which, at over 132 metres, will be one of the highest residential towers in London. This landscape is more dystopian however as the reality of the empty lot is not what is promised by the imagery on the hoarding.

  • Construction workers wearing hard hats hook up a pile of concrete beams on to a waiting crane hook. One man bends down to help loop a chain beneath one of the girders and attached to the dangling hook while another secures the chain and another man is in radio contact with the crane driver out of sight. Importantly, behind their low-loader truck is a Smirnoff advertising billboard with a famous ad campaign for the Vodka distillery. It depicts three carved Polynesian statues of Easter Island but seen through a botttle of the alcoholic beverage, is a representation of a face wearing a head band and MP3 headphones. Seen juxtaposed with the construction men and their building technology this scene describes a visual pun between an ancient lost civilization and the modern age of technology. Smirnoff is a vodka distillery founded in Moscow, by Piotr Arsenieyevich Smirnov. The <br />
brand is now distributed in 130 countries and includes flavored vodka and malt beverages. The Sminoff advertising campaign is said to be based on the Belgian surrealist artist Rene Magritte whose paradoxical images stretched our ideas of what was reality and the fantastic.

  • Aspirational illustration of future housing development where gentrification is happening in Camberwell, south London. The illustration conveys a fantasy for many, for a quality lifestyle in affordable housing though the reality is far from this as ordinary people struggle to afford a place to live of their own. Camberwell is undergoing massive change as new flats and apartments are built to satisfy the government's need to develop housing for a population desperate for new homes. The image and graffiti seem to have been written as a no hope, disrespect to those wanting their own property.

  • Digger arm and construction hoarding illustration. The background of a utopian view from this new development in London's Victoria district is juxtaposed with the dirty reality of the construction equipment that rests, its arm on the pavement having just broken up old paving stones.

  • Sheriff Woody Pride, aka Woody, the cowboy character from the Pixar/Disney CGI fantasy film Toy Story, lies forgotten outside a south London charity shop. Facing the viewer, we see the happy features of this famous movie character - whose on-screen narrative is that of a forgotten toy, now unwanted by his growing-up boy owner. As art becomes reality, Woody has been left on the pavement after being dumped by his previous family. A common problem is that charity donors leave unwanted things outside in the street, for others to come and rifle through, leaving a mess that's difficult for volunteers to clean up.

  • Lady smoker and roadworks signs below an Oasis fashion poster featuring a young woman in a utopian fantasy about to cross a road. Stopping for a smoke before carrying on her journey, the scene behind her is of a scene of retail paradise that features the model wheeling a shopping trolley, we also see a dystopian reality of the everyday city, the abandoned traffic signs leaning against this poster for the womens' retailer Oasis. A No Right-Turn and a Priority sign have been left on the ground, perfectly in context with the message above.

  • An athletic man poses against a wall on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach, Florida. This fine specimen of a man wears roller-blades and trousers tucked into his skates with a yellow t-shirt with the word Frequency across his pectoral muscles. His shdow appears across the wall and because of the angle, his shape has been greatly exaggerated, his body becoming a much wider, stockier proportion than the reality. He stands with an arm resting high on the wall and the other on his hip, almost in a feminine manner. He is nonetheless the epitome of maleness, of virility with the healthy physique that women adore and other men are jealous of! The sdidewalk pavement arcs around a corner and the wall with its long shadow is a strong diagonal line across the picture, disappearing to the far right.

  • Two young British Asian men stand in front of a Bollywood action hero poster, while waiting for a bus in Southhall, West London, England. The lads are in their early twenties and are dressed against the cold European winter. The muscular Indian man in the movie poster is in his prime, posing as a tough guy and making a serious face towards the viewer, his rippling biceps wet with sweat. We see two ordinary young men living the harsh reality of life in a big English city, with all the pressures, paradoxes and cultural differences of India or Bangladesh, and that of multicultural Britain. It may be sunny but the biting winter day is raw with cold.

  • As afternoon light fades, we see an incongruous landscape of false forest trees amid an industrial airport lot. A supporting pillar from the hotel chain, Sofitel, a 605 bedroom, 27 suite and 45 meeting room accommodation and business hub, is situated at the Heathrow Airport 's Terminal 5 hotel. The woodland screen is hiding a wasteland of undeveloped land that may soon be another airport hotel but at the moment, it makes for a strange rural/urban scene where the viewer is not sure where reality stops and fiction takes over. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • A homeless man lying underneath a billboard advertising poster for the latest series of Big Brother. The new series of the celebrity version of the hit TV show starts on Chanel 5 in the UK on 17th August 2011. The feeling of surveillance and the contrasting life of the man in the picture shows a stark reality of rich and poor. Of celebrity and man on the street, quite literally

  • The fantasy of a model sunbathing on a beach is the opposite the experience of a local girl on a dark and rainy London on an April morning. The difference between dream and dystopia are evident in this backdrop, an ad for Salvatore Ferragamo (1898 – 1960) who was an Italian shoe designer. He worked with many Hollywood stars in the 1920s, before returning to Italy to found the eponymous company making unique hand-made footwear. Film stars and celebrities continue to patronize his company, which has evolved into a luxury goods empire spanning the world.
