  • A young deer lies dead beside a busy highway on a road near Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington State. Very recently run-over but seemingly unharmed, this animal has head injuries and died immediately from a collision with a passing vehicle, such as this heavy articulated lorry which blurrs past this location. This is forested area and the deer's natural habitat but too often wildlife in its natural surroundings violently meets the modern human environment and the animal comes of worst. As a result of the death, the roadkill was taken by members of a US Air Force survival course at their nearby facility and so it formed an unscheduled extra lesson in preparing venison for the pot that night (see Corbis image entitled 'US Air Force survival instructors with recent roadkill').

  • Largely American passengers re-join their cruise holiday voyage around the Gulf of Mexico during a day's stop-over in Cancun, Mexico. Reflected in the puddles of recent seasonal rain, they queue up on the port's quayside to have their identity passes checked before being allowed back on board the Fun Ship Ecstasy. Seen above them and in reflected in the water at their feet are some of the many windows and portholes of this enormous vessel belonging to the Vegas-style Carnival Cruise lines company. The Panamanian-registered MS Ecstasy is a 70,367 ton cruise ship carrying 2,052 passengers and 920 crew whose routes are mainly around the Gulf and Carribean Sea.

  • A young man has stopped by a rubbish bin to inspect his shoulder on which a nearby pigeon has recently messed on his best work suit. It is an unfortunate incident in the middle of a working day for this man in the heart of the City of London, London's financial centre - otherwise called The Square Mile. Armed with a spare tissue paper, the male cranes his neck over the shoulder to see how much of the crap remains while the flock of birds pace around on nearby grass to scavenge for crumbs left by other lunchtime office workers, otherwise enjoying warm weather in Bishopsgate Churchyard.

  • Standing with a recently-killed deer run-over on a nearby highway, members of a special US Air Force (USAF) survival course (see Corbis image 42-18212808) pose by the gutted carcass of their animal in a forest near their facility at Fairchild AFB, Spokane, Washington State. These tough-looking men host visiting air crew whose flying careers depend on passing this rigorous week of escape and evasion instruction. Should they land in enemy territory for example, they will need all the skills learned here to survive possibly weeks in the wilderness so trapping and preparing fresh meat for human consumption is of paramount importance. Here the teachers stand around the venison which is strung up on a branch, its intestines and organs already removed by a hunting knife. They wear camouflage uniforms, face paint to look vicious, threatening and heartless.

  • The still new Canary Wharf tower stands tall in the distance with a foreground of a city in turmoil. A still derelict space occupies the space where large offices will be built in the future. Fences stop trespassers from entering a water-filled hole on wasteland. This docklands development in east London is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape. The centrepiece was 1, Canada Square, also known as the Canary Wharf tower.

Rising tall is the new Canary Wharf tower (known as 1, Canada Square) soon after its completion - and before the subsequently extensive development phases. This docklands development in east London is the product of the 1980s financial boom when during the office of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, huge building projects such as the Docklands consortium saw vast changes in London's landscape. By 2012 Canary Wharf contained 14,000,000 square feet (1,300,000 m2) of office and retail space. Around 90,000 people work here and it is home to the world or European headquarters of numerous major banks, professional services firms and media organisations.

It is a seemingly rural location but is, in fact, an area of inner-city London, close to major construction projects, transforming Docklands into a major centre for finance and new housing.

  • Passengers wait for trains at the new Hongqiao Railway Station in Shanghai, China on 19 August 2010. The station will cater exclusively to passengers taking high-speed inter-city trains. In just a few years, China has built the world's longest high-speed rail network, named China Rail High-speed (CRH), and continues to expand despite accusations of technology pilfering and safety concerns. On July 23rd, 2011, two high-speed trains in eastern China collided due to supposed malfunctioning in the signaling system, killing 40 and injuring hundreds, meanwhile a slew of corruption scandals at China's rail ministry has surfaced recently. The Railways Ministry's debts have ballooned in recent years. At the end of the first quarter its obligations totaled 1.98 trillion yuan ($307 billion), about 5% of China's gross domestic product.

  • The new road to the remote village of Ban Chakhampa, Phongsaly province, Lao PDR. Whilst not affected directly by the Nam Ou Cascade Hydropower Dam 6 construction project, the village of Ban Chakhampa has benefitted from the new road passing by on the way to Ban Watai, a village which has recently been relocated due to the dam construction. In recent years many roads have been cut into the hills to connect villages that were formerly communicable only by a network of narrow footpaths.

  • A recently harvested upland rice field, Ban Cha Wang, Phongsaly province, Lao PDR. Slash and burn cultivation or ‘hai’ in Lao consists of cutting the natural vegetation, leaving it to dry and then burning it for temporary cropping of the land, the ash acting as a natural fertiliser. Shifting cultivation practices, although remarkably sustainable and adapted to their environment in the past, have come under increasing stress in recent decades and are now starting to be a major problem in Lao PDR, causing widespread deforestation and watershed degradation.

  • Passengers wait for their trains above the high-speed railway tracks at the railway station in Wuxi, China on 19 August 2010.
