  • A Supermarine Spitfire awaits refuelling with Avgas 100LL fuel at Farnborough International Airshow media launch. The pilot is the air show's Flight Operations Director Rod Dean who stands on the wing of this old WW2 warbird fighter of the British Royal Air Force and the refueller man has unhooked the nozzle from the bowser and hauls it across the concrete towards the aircraft. Hazardous and flammable signs are on the truck's rear. Avgas 100LL is a fuel designed for piston engines and is the most commonly used aviation fuel, dyed blue for easy visual identification. 100LL, spoken as "100 low lead", contains a small amount of tetra-ethyl lead (TEL), a lead compound that reduces gasoline's tendency to spontaneously explode (detonation or "knock") under high loads, high temperatures and high pressures - perfect for aerobatic performance flying.

  • A red Hawk jet aircraft belonging to the elite 'Red Arrows', Britain's prestigious Royal Air Force aerobatic team, is parked outside a nearby hangar on the concrete 'apron' (where aircraft park) at the squadron's headquarters at RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire. A member of the team's support ground crew (the Blues because of their distinctive blue overalls worn at summer air shows) prepare to refuel as the last daylight fades and artificial light from the hangar illuminates the scene. Their winter training schedule is both rigorous on the aircraft and demanding on the pilots who will typically fly up to six times a day in preparation of the forthcoming summer when they display at 90-plus air shows. After the day's flying, the engineers' night shift arrive to service and maintain the aging fleet of 11 aircraft.

In afternoon light, a lady in a stars and stripes shirt stands arms behind her back admiring the lovingly restored polished twin-engine bomber, the most heavily armed airplane of the second world war used for high and low-level bombing, strafing, photoreconnaissance, submarine patrol and fighter. Close to a million populate the mass fly-in over the week, a pilgrimage worshipping all aspects of flight. The event annually generates $85 million in revenue over a 25 mile radius from Oshkosh.   • Farnborough International Airshow Flight Operations Director Rod Dean poses in front of AVM Cliff Spink's Spitfire that he has just flown a display in at the Farnborough Air Show media launch. Posing with hands behind his back and with his flying helmet complete with goggles on his forehead, the veteran Hunter fighter pilot is now retired from the RAF but as a young Pilot Officer, won the first-ever International Air Tattoo flying trophy in 1972. The Spitfire's canopy is left open and its propeller has stopped turning as the aircraft awaits refuelling. Dean's role at the Farnborough show is of organiser of the flying programme and the static ground display.

  • Near the end of the military runway at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk England, a road sign warns of low-flying aircraft near the base which is populated by the United States Air Force Refuelling Wing. Beneath the triangular sign is a locally made makeshift advertisement for CJ's, a nearby cafe. It is summer and the shrubs are green with white flowers to the side. The sign itself has become discoloured with green algae after being rained on over successive wet weather days. In the UK, the Highway Code for road-users lists this warning sign (always triangular) as "Low-flying aircraft or sudden aircraft noise."
