  • The recently relocated village of Ban Thong Chalern in Sayaboury province, Lao PDR. Ban Thong Chalern consists of three villages (Khmu and Lao Loum) which have been joined together due to relocation because of the ongoing construction of the Xayaburi Dam in Northern Laos. The Xayaburi Dam is a hydroelectric dam under construction on the Lower Mekong River approximately 30 kilometres east of Xayaburi town in Northern Laos. The project is surrounded in controversy due to complaints from downstream riparians and environmentalists that the dam would cause significant and irreversible damage to the river's ecosystem. Funded by a Thai company, 90% of the electricity produced by the dam has already been pre-sold to Thailand.

  • Looking down from a person's height, we see two Pitbull dogs standing quietly on a south London street pavement. The two animals seem docile but are attached to leads held by an unknown owner. AT the dogs' feet in a stencilled sign that Lambeth, the local council has left at many locations of its streets where dog owners neglect to collect their pets' mess. Their idea was to paint the words "Bag it. Bin it" to help educate this unhygienic practice. Britain's Dangerous Dogs Act bans the breeding and sale or exchange of four kinds of dog - pit bull terriers, Japanese Tosas, the Dogo Argentinos, and the Fila Brasileiros. Under the act, a dog classed as being "dangerously out of control in a public place" can be destroyed. The owner can be fined and imprisoned for up to six months. If a dog injures someone, the owner can be jailed for up to two years.

  • In the twilight, the artificial illumination of Macau's Hotel Lisboa 24-hour a day casino is the only colour (color) of this cityscape. The dominating silhouette of a giant open-mouthed Chinese lion looms from outside the Bank of China building in central Macau. Besides historical Chinese and Portuguese world-heritage relics, Macau's biggest attraction is its gaming business. Its gambling revenue in 2006 weighed in at a massive £3.6bn - about £100m more than Las Vegas. Though many forms of gambling are legal here, the most popular game in the casinos is baccarat, which generates over two thirds of the gaming industry's gross receipts. The official languages are Portuguese and Chinese and the Macau Special Administrative Region, more commonly known as Macau - or Macao - is one of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), along with Hong Kong. Administered by Portugal until 1999, it was the oldest European colony in China, dating back to the 16th century. The administrative power over Macau was transferred to the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1999, 2 years after Hong Kong's own handover. Macau's name is derived from A-Ma-Gau or Place of A-Ma and this temple dedicated to the seafarers' goddess dates from the early 16th century.

  • Days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, posters starting appearing at strategic locations in Manhattan that showed the faces of missing citizens, lost in the ruins of terrorist devastation. After overnight rain, the inks and dyes of home-printed pictures by relatives streaked and ran obliterating victims’ faces. DNA samples were taken at the Armory so human remains might be identified so it was a point of focus for those with missing relatives who attached thousands of posters to walls with pictures and messages to loved-ones in the hope of being reunited. Emotions were running high and many citizens offered spiritual aide such as food and drink. In outpourings of grief, anger and patriotic rhetoric, flags were flown as never before as America sought to express their emotions and unity.

She dramatically stamps her foot and raises her arms in a Juerga an informal, spontaneous gathering where dancing, singing, palmas (hand clapping), or simply pounding in rhythm are enjoyed. Grown out of the fusion of Arabic, Andalusian, Sephardic, and Gypsy cultures traditional flamenco artists simply learned by listening and watching relatives, friends and neighbours. It adapts to the local talent, instrumentation and mood of the audience. Seville holds its annual fair in rows of temporary marquee casetas, hosting families and friends which begin during the April Fair two weeks after the Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week in the Andalusian capital.

  • Family and relatives watch a 4 year-old's baptism ceremony in a local Catholic church. Reaching down to the young lad, the priest touches him on the cheek as part of this ancient rite when a Christian is welcomed into the church. The word baptism is a sacrament and an ordinance of Jesus Christ. In some denominations, baptism is also called christening but for others the word "christening" is reserved for the baptism of infants.

  • We look down behind an airline passenger who is alone on seating in the departures concourse of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5. Mourning the death of a mother, the lady sits with a floral tribute to the recently-deceased relative whose name 'Mum' is laid out next to her in pink flowers. On her lap is the organic Soil Association's magazine Living Earth. Perhaps the woman is on her way to a family funeral and is flying from T5 on this sad flight. Amid the otherwise bustling international airport, the woman seeks solace and tries to sleep before her check-in zone opens. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • Mothers and sons hug emotionally in the international arrivals hall of Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 airport. Three families have gathered to meet their respective sons who have been travelling around the world during their university gap year sabbatical trip of a lifetime. With balloons and banners amid the hectic concourse where other relatives greet their loved-ones after months away from home on their adventures. This is a tradition practised across the world's airports where families are separated by the need to travel or work in other countries and the emotion of meeting again after long absences is always hard. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • "One candle." A family are gathered to celebrate the first birthday of a young child, the back garden of her parent's south London home. The birthday girl reaches out to touch the single lit candle on a chocolate log cake while her grandmother and mother both show her how to blow and extinguish the flame instead. Friends and relatives are sat around the garden on a perfect late-summer afternoon, drinking and laughing on this joyous occasion, a milestone in the first year of any young life. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

A decorated Christmas tree is seen in the far corner and the curtains behind are drawn. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella.
