  • The renowned maze designer Randoll Coate works in his studio on more labyrinth plans. Gilbert Randoll Coate (8 October 1909 – 2 December 2005) was a British diplomat, maze designer and "labyrinthologist". With interests in art and history, Coate completed over 50 new mazes in Britain and around the world. His designs are particularly noted for their symbolism. Although it is rarely possible to see a large maze in plan view, they would often incorporate hidden shapes and references of significance to the clients who had commissioned the maze. Notable work includes: Bath Festival Maze (1984) — a stone path in Beazer Gardens, Bath; a yew hedge maze at Blenheim Palace for the Duke of Marlborough; El laberinto de Borges (Borges Memorial Maze) — San Rafael, Mendoza, Argentina. He died in Le Rouret, near Grasse, France on the 2 December 2005, aged 96.

  • One man is acclaimed the world over and is synonymous with making hand-carved puppets - Bryan Clarke. He is Chairman of the British Punch & Judy Fellowship and has been a professional Punch & Judy man for well over 50 years, making and supplying puppets from his workshop near Lowestoft on the east coast of England for the last 30 years. Hundreds of Punch & Judy performers throughout the UK and overseas use Bryan's puppets and some are seen here in various stages of production - some finished and hanging from this shed roof while in front of this talented artist, we see blocks of wood still being shaped into the familiar characters that children the world over recognise as Mr Punch and other figures. Mr Clarke smiles at the view in this relaxed portrait taken in 1992.

  • With orange sparks falling away below, a shipbuilder welds while standing on a scaffolding gantry on the hull of a large German ferry at the Polish Gdansk shipyard - once known as the Lenin Shipyard but still the largest of its kind in modern Poland. The grimy and hazardous working conditions make for a dangerous environment in which to work and the worker wears a protective hood on his head. Here in 1980 the union Solidarity (Solidarnosc) was conceived and was partly responsible for a growing dissent against Communist rule, ultimately contributing towards the fall of the Berlin Wall. Lech Walesa started his political career as an electrical technician here, going on to lead Solidarity and then to become President of a democratic Poland. Today Gdansk is a major industrial city and shipping port.

  • 1,890 meters (6,200 feet) above sea level and surrounded by lush tea plantations in Sri Lanka's Hill Country district of Nuwara Eliya, women tea pickers bend over trees to harvest Ceylon tea leaves that are taken to the white building on the left for processing. A carpet of velvety green tea bushes stretch into the far distance. This is the heart of the island's tea industry but was a pleasure retreat of the European planters due to its temperate English climate that produces the finest leaves for the country's economy. Teas from this highest region are described as the champagne of Ceylon teas. The leaf is gathered all year round but the finest teas are made from that plucked in January and February. The best teas of the area give a rich, golden, excellent quality liquor that is smooth, bright, and delicately perfumed.

  • A man hangs from the hat of Prince Henry, Duke of Viseu, at the Monument of the Discoveries at Belem, Lisbon. The man has found a way to scale part of the 177 foot (54 metre) high celebration to Henry, otherwise known as Henry the Navigator, or Seafarer. The trespasser is dwarfed by the giant, oversized effigies and the man hangs by his fingers and rests his foot on Henry's ship's sail which points out to sea. It is a clear day with blue skies and the slightly yellow stone is side-lit to show each feature of the carvings in fine detail. It is a classic scene of Portguese history depicted during the 1960s fascist Portuguese President Salazar's regime. Henry remains one of ocean-conquering Portugal's most famous of cartographers, whose explorers discovered new routes around Africa and the Atlantic. Although he was called Prince Henry the Navigator by the English, Prince Henry never actually sailed on any of the voyages of discovery he sponsored. Instead, Prince Henry established a school for the study of the arts of navigation, mapmaking, and shipbuilding. This would allow sailors to better guide their ships and to come up with new ship designs. Immediately behind Henry is King Manuel I then poet Luis de Camōes. The eight figures are carved by sculptor Leopoldo Almeida and along with the monument, were commissioned for the 1960 world exhibition to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Henry's death in 1460.

church wall in the city centre. A mother and child sit on a bench below the names of those local men lost in the first war (AD1914-18) - the 200 names tell a story of the lost generation of youth, now replaced by the modern Brit, unused to self-sacrifice and loss on an unimaginable scale. The church is medieval, renowned for its perpendicular porch, fan vaults and merchants' tombs. The chancel is the oldest part of the church. Construction started around 1115.
